My granny used to make my grandfather and me what I think she called hoe cakes...but, I'm not 100% sure of that. It was sort of like corn bread in the shape of a small pancake...but sweeter. We used to watch the Gillette spoonsored boxing on Sat night and eat those things with butter on them like popcorn. You could also crumble them up in milk and eat them with a spoon. Does anyone know what they were and how to make them? Granny and Mom are both gone now and they were the only two in the family that made 'em.

I'll see if my moma has Grannie's recipe. The story I've heard comes from La. They would take the dry mix out to the cotton fields/ Mix it with alittle water put it on your Hoe and cook it over hot coals.

WOW, today a girl I ate lunch with had THAT! dummy me said, "oh you have a leftover pancake" LOL, she insisted I sample, I couldn't believe it :) Can't wait to cook some!

Also known as scalded cornbread.
Basically just corn meal and water.

Anyone know where they got the name "hoe cakes" ?
I do. :D

Oh well so much for the mystery when I clicked on the first link. :(

My dad and his family used to cook them in the cotton fields. Really did cook 'em right on the hoe.
