My dad and I got drawn for the Muzzleloader hunt at the end of the month at Hiwassee Refuge. We have never hunted here, but have heard good things. If there is any advice you would be willing to give us, we are all ears. We obviously aren't asking for your honey hole, but would definitely appreciate any help. Wed do not have access to a boat so that's out. Thanks in advance for your help.

Have you been to scout any or looked at a topo map yet?

Boat access is a good thing I hear. I've never hunted it but if there is any swampy/flooded areas, they will be prime for a later season hunt. Most hunters will not be willing/able to go to those areas and risk getting wet when its cold. This will probably mean that some deer will hang out in these areas.

I've hunted it a couple times. Missed an 8 pt one time and killed a 9 pt the next time. I would hunt from the ground and try to find travel areas around the river they would use for escape routes. The one I killed I drove all the way to the river parked and walk about 200 yards to food plot and sat down on the edge. Soon as day broke he chased 2 does across the field dropped him in his tracks. Was home by 8:30 am!
