I just got access to a 50 acre farm in Hickman Co for the cost of the venison off the first 2 deer I put down, just need approval from the lady I work with's father.

This is horse farm with very large organic garden they harvest and sell to resurants. It has net been hunted in approx 8-10 years. I've seen a few pictures of it, and it is alot of pasture for the horses. But what kind of deer can I expect out there?

I've only hunted Macon Co in Tennessee, alot of woods and hills. I was just starting to get the hang of it there when the season ended. Is HIckman going to be more like Wisconsin or the same steep hills?

This is a 99% for sure thing, but until I'm in a tree this fall I am keeping my fingers crossed.
 
we have a farm in hickman county and its hollers and ridges bottoms big ag fields. I would guess you should have an opportunity for a good deer we usually kill 2-4 but its a 300 acre farm. but there are some good deer in hickman county.
 
It will most likely be somewhere between rolling hills and pretty steep ridges / hollows. I don't know if there is 50 acres of flat ground in the whole county except some fields right along the Duck River (I know there isn't any in the SW part of the county). We took a big hit from EHD back in the late 2000's, but the deer population has really rebounded in the past couple of years. I had 22 deer in my front yard the other evening, and I did not have a single hunting trip last season that I didn't see multiple deer.
 
I am trying to contain myself and wait till I get the offical word I can hunt it.

But its a vegetable farm that has a few horses. They just want the deer thinned. I guess they are just destroying thier crops.

I think of those as really big and nice food plots.
 
I haven't hunted it since 2010 but there are lots of deer there. the county has lots of deer leases. when we used to hunt there we'd see anywhere from 1-10 deer per sit. with a garden I'd be near that. Like you said, food plot.
 
I found out an interesting tidbit about a bunch of land in SW Hickman that I assume is true. A friend of mine who has a farm a couple of miles down the road from me mentioned that 9000 acres of what used to be Westvaco timber company land was bought by a Chinese company back last summer, and hunting leases are not being renewed on that land (including the 3000 acres directly behind my place). What they are doing is clear-cutting a bunch of it (they started this past fall). JCDEERMAN, supposedly that is what is going on around Wade's Branch near your lease. Have you heard anything similar? I know one guy that is (was) on a lease of some of the land that was supposedly bought, but I haven't had a chance to talk to him to confirm or debunk it.

That would suck if its true. Another 9000 acres of woods not huntable.

I'm still going to try and find a lease clsoer to home(Hendersonville) since this is almost a 2 hour drive. I figure I'll hang 2 stands, make the drive down a few times and whatever I stick I'll give to the owner. This is more pest control the way the owners daughter tells me. But that's the tenative plan, who knows till I actually see it.

Again I'm not trying to get too excited until I have 100% confirmed permission.

You will find a much higher deer density in Hickman County, but still lots of ridge-and-hollow hardwoods (probably steeper than most of Macon County). But for whatever reason,Hickman County does grow some impressive bucks. Very good buck age structure in much of the county.

And by the way, I think I now the organic farm you are talking about. Many of clients are in Hickman, so I know the county (at least the northern half) fairly well.

Well that certainly didn't help me not get my hopes up :grin:.

I work with a young lady, and we started talking yesterday and deer came up. She mentioned her families farm and how deer were killing it and I mentioned that I LOVE deer hunting. So just waiting to make sure its okay with her father, but I offered money to hunt it and she just wants the deer population lowered and some meat to eat.

I would love to stick a big one and as many does as they want.
 
There have been some really nice bucks killed there and it still ranks pretty high in the state for deer kill. :)
