Thermals are amazing things. If you hunt hill country, you better learn how thermals work. They can make or break your hunt.
I didn't really pay attention to thermals until about 15 years ago when I started bow hunting for elk in CO. I knew it would be applicable to deer hunting hill country here, but how much? Boy, I learned a lot and it still is something that has many unknowns. But it was funny how 15 years ago when I started applying here what I learned out west, I started being more successful 🤔
 
On north-south running ridges, it's amazing the difference in thermals on the east-facing and west-facing slopes, especially at sunrise.

Although I no longer use smoke bombs. The smoke from them is a bit too warm and tends to rise more than a random parcel of air. Now I use my vape. The vape cloud is completely neutrally buoyant, in that it will just hang there if there's no movement of air. But the slightest air movement and off it goes. And I can see it for a long, long ways before it dissipates.

Have you noticed any specific patterns in regards to the N-S & E-W slopes? I have a few really great travel corridors that are located ~75 yds off the edge of an ag field that I will not hunt unless the wind in consistent and I know the temperature change is going to be significant to push my thermals uphill.

On a tall north-south ridge, thermals will begin to rise up the hill the instant the rising sun hits the ridge-top. The air at the top of the ridge gets warmed, rises, and is replaced by air coming up the east side. However, it takes much longer for the air on the west-facing side to begin to warm, hence you will still see a downhill cool thermal on the west side until late in the morning (9 to 10 AM).

That's exactly what I experience from this location I referred to. N-S ridge, east facing stand location, thermals pull uphill and keeps me safe while hunting the edge of a strip of cutover. I hadn't thought about the west side of the ridge thought but makes sense. Thanks!
 
Three of the four main ridges on our place run just over a mile each straight N/S. What complicates things are all the secondary ridges and points that shoot off each main ridge - dozens on each side of each ridge. You get down off in one of those at the wrong time, and you're just sitting in a swirling factory

Yes you are. But I sure love hunting those locations where a secondary point drops away from the main ridge!
 
Some locations you just know the wind is going to be swirling! I try to cut scent as much as possible, hunt these locations on high% days, and get as high as I can and hope!

The worst are valleys. I won't hunt low in valleys unless the wind is virtually zero, so I can rely on "normal" thermals in the evening.

Something to think about when hunting valleys, esp in the evenings...

IF you can hunt the valley about 300 yards before the valley ends and the terrain rises again, the downhill thermals coming from all directions except from your entrance point up the valley will funnel down to you.

If the prevailing winds come from any direction than your approach up the valley, the scent will swirl around like a toiled bowl and flush out down and to your face.

Again, you have to be at least 300 yards from where the valley dead ends and elevation starts to rise. Get 100y further up the valley, and you are caught in the toilet bowl effect and you will spook deer 360d around you.
