I'm gonna have to blame you for sleep deprivation if I start getting up super early in the morning just to drop flies in front of carp before work, until I catch one bigger than that hawg you got with the cowlick in its scales... I know where to find em too.... :grin:

My success depends on weather conditions. I pretty much can't score unless the sky is almost completely cloudless and in clear water. The 10-day forecast says I won't be fishing for quite a while. BD, on the other hand, does best in cloudy conditions, because of his type of fishing.

That's what makes it interesting. You have to adapt to conditions, and everyone is dealing with the same weather. I, unfortunately, haven't learned how to adapt. :sick:

Man last time I was sight fishing for carp I had trouble with overcast skies and glare on the water, even with glasses. just get on the right angle so trees are in the reflection and you can see fish better. I did have one carp I snuck on and he swam right to me, never saw me, dropped a fly in front of him and he did not spook, but showed no interest and rejected it... when it rains is when I really hate it because you can't see anything under the water.
 
I float the Cumby in my big jonboat and pound the banks for fish. When it's cloudy or the water is silty, I have to float right up on the fish to see them. They usually see me first - game over. On sunny days, I can hang back from the bank and catch them mudding way in advance. That way, I have time to position the boat and make the best presentation possible before the fish has seen me.

It may be that the weather won't cooperate for the rest of the month, and I'm done fishing this year's tournament. In years past, I wasn't satisfied unless I won it all. I won a ton of tournaments but wore my azz out and had very little fun doing it.

For some reason, that "win or go home" mentality is now gone. If I'm done fishing in this year's tournament even though I lost, I'm totally fine with it and had a ball fishing it.

Get some sleep, catman. I don't want anyone to get sleep deprived just trying to beat little ol' me. :)

Overcast skies do make it much tougher to see the fish. However, it's a tradeoff. The common carp stay up feeding on the flats longer on cloudy days. Buffalo will often stay up shallow all day, but they are picky eaters, and I'd rather fish to commons when I can. Buffalo are a pain in the butt. If I cast a fly perfectly to 100 fish, maybe one or two will bite - and they fight like slugs. Common carp are more forgiving, they will eat a fly about 70 percent of the time if you present it well and they see it, and they fight much harder.

I would rather have more shots at common carp on a cloudy day, even if I have a harder time seeing them, than cast at buffalo on a sunny day and feel like I'm wasting my time.
 
yeah I am with you, commons are my #1 quarry with grass carp being #2 for this tournament. I will cast to buffalo just because they are there but carp get me excited...

Speaking of which, I had a 20 lb grass carp take a fly today and when I set the hook the line just popped loose and all I found was an intact surgeon's loop with no fly attached. I have no idea how the loop came out of the eye of the hook, but it chose the worst possible time to do so. Now if I am sleep deprived it is not your fault anymore. :sick: Could have won the tourney except for a freak mishap. The grass carp didn't cooperate any more after that, even though there were 10-15 fish ranging from 4 to 20 pounds est. Saw a few commons but no takers (poor presentation I think)
 
I broke off a common that was probably over 20 last Sunday because he ran me into a tree. I couldn't turn him. That's life. Big fish leave no margin for error. Hopefully I will see another one that size before the end of the month, but commons that big don't come into fly fishing range frequently.

You're lucky to have a spot on public water where you've got grass carp to cast to. I don't know of any places that have them. They get big.

Sorry you lost that fish. Breaking off in the sticks makes more sense than a hook magically detaching from a loop knot though.

Yeah I have this fishin hole that is public access and has grass carp but I haven't seen any that look bigger than 20 pounds. But there are plenty of them and my pulse starts going when I see them eating leaves on the surface. They are very spooky and skeptical fish and won't just ignore your flies, they will avoid them on purpose and seem to know when you are after them.
