I've never had any caps with that flared bottom, but unless the nipple has been replaced it should use #11 caps. Caps are cheap, so if nothing else he could just buy some and try them.

He had some #11 but they were not wide enough. Then he pulled a few of those out of a container. I have never seen anything like that.

I had some old musket caps years ago that looked very similar to the one shown. It is bigger than a #11. Not saying that is what that is but resembles it.

Then it's a musket cap for sure.

It's a musket cap. Probably changed over from #11 years ago. Used to if you wanted more fire to powder you drilled out the #11 nipple to make the fire channel bigger, some even put powder in the nipple, or changed over to a musket cap nipple. Musket caps are still available but not as common as #11 caps. That New Englander is a fine gun. Remember the days when one was brought out all mouths went to drooling and one was considered to have money if you had one of those

Thanks guys. Just somebody at the local range yesterday afternoon. He had 0 experience with any ML. Musket caps predated my time. The gun shop told him he needed shotgun primers. I told him to take the primers, bullets, and powder and use it in a CVA Wolf. LOL

Had a 5-8 cook off in my shirt pocket 1 evening about dark, muzzy hunting in Scott county 1 cold ass day and dropped my 2 way radio in my pocket, forgot about the MC, bouncing down the trail on the atv with my buddy setting on the back, bang, thought I had been shot but no pain, my 2 way radio was a drop in charge model and the charging points heated them up enuff to cook them off. Got lucky learn by my mistakes lol
