Has anyone ever had bugs eat on your mounts? I have just discovered that my biggest deer to date is infested with some type of larvae that is eating the hair. This mount is 4 years old and next to 2 older mounts(15 years and older) and they are not touched. A quick Google search said it was moth or beetle larvae. Any tips on removal, I don't want this guy to be ruined! Thanks for any help.

Never had it on a mount - but moth larvae is your primary culprit. They'll eat most any cloth/fiber. For carpets, I've heard of shampooing, but I don't know how the deer mount would hold up with that method. Call an exterminator.

In other news, your carpet and clothes are all in jeopardy too.

I had some eat a turkey....all the feathers fell out and all that was left was the hide on a form.....450.00 down the drain

If you have room in a large chest freezer put it in there four 4-5 days and bomb your house with a good insecticide. When whatever is eating your first mount gets done it will move to the others.
Do you know if the hide was tanned or dry preserved? That can tell you a lot too. Dry preserved hides can get flaky over time and almost look like they have dandruff.

If it is a moth or moth larvae then they have several diff things u can treat beehives with that kill them. I use crushed up toilet bowl cleaner tablets, the kind u hang in the bowl to keep the out of my hives.
