Myself, I usually try to wait till their 8 to 10 months and then I dont push em real hard. Get them familiar with a coon with a hide and then maybe a cage coon but dont over do the cage coon. All it is meant to do is get them coon crazy. Once they show they are coon crazy then stop showing them the cage coon. You can still use a cage coon after that but what I usually do is turn it out without them seeing it in the cage. Wait a while and then turn them loose in the same general area that you turned the coon loose. They should be able to find the track pretty easy. After you have done that a couple of times and you feel they are advancing fairly well, then just take them to the woods a couple of nights a week and just let them do their thing. It will be slow going but the more they learn on their own the better off they will be. You could possibly even run it with an older dog that is as close to 100% broke as possible. Age is the key. As long as you keep him in the woods and he has even a little bit of coondog bred in him, then he will get better with time. You cant expect to take a 3 year old kid and send it to high school if you know what I mean. Hope this helps.
