Thompson Encore. You can buy and swap barrels, if you ever want a rifle. I love my Encore. Pop for a good scope, like a Leupold. At a minimum, mount your scope on Leupold rings. I actually had a Nixon Scope, I bought at the NRA Expo in Phx a few years back. In talking with the Nikon guy, he actually said to walk over and buy my rings from the Leupold guy. Good decision.

How about old school flint or a sidelock? With a little practice a patched round ball is bad news for any deer inside of 75yds.

I'm just throwing the idea out there, its your $ after all.

Why smokeless, that takes away that amazing cloud of smoke when you know you smoked a deer? For me smokeless powder, might as well use a rifle..
The mystery of whether it's a good shot or not with your smoke cloud would be taken away..

I'm most interested in smokeless because of the cleaning issue. A busy man like me doesn't always have time to clean a gun after coming in from the woods, and the thought of accidentally rusting out a new CVA or Knight barrel makes me cringe. However, a local shop has a good price on the Accura package, and it does look appealing (and less money than the Savage).

Is there an alternative to the Savage smokeless in the same relative price range? I see a few custom jobs in the $1,500-$3,000 range, but I can't justify that for two weeks out of the year.

For only 2 weeks out of the year, I'd probably go with the CVA. I don't have a smokeless, but I like mine. If you're looking to use it more often, I'd go with something else.

ease of cleaning. i can have the stainless gun cleaned and spotless in a few minutes. the blued gun has never been clean even after hundreds of patches.

the knight is a great gun and made in tennessee. however they dont produce the 2024 muzzle velocity with a 300 gr bullet on 42 grain powder and moa accuracy with no smoke and no corrosion ...

Just got an ML II. It is a genuine 200+ yard gun. Cost per shot is much less than my optima.

i get more than enough velocity to kill any thing in america with a 250 grain expander, 3/4 inch groups and cleans up in only a couple minutes using blackhorn, the smokless is no better in my eyes, but everyone on here seems to push the crap out of them.not nocking them i just enjoy the smoke pole the way it is. ill keep my smoke pole and keep filling tags, good luck to all and most important keep it safe and fun

Knightrider I used to be the same as you, all them Savage guys was so adamant about how superior their guns were, it used to make me mad too how they thought their's was so much better than mine. Then one day I ran across a deal on one and bought it to see what all the fuss was about..........they was right.
