I'm wanting one to build for a long range setup.I want a 300 ultra mag but am concerned about barrel life, cost to load and recoil. I have also concidered 300 win mag and 243 but cant make my mind up. Please help lol.

I have a 300 RUM it is dead nuts to 400 yards,,after that you have to compensate,,so if you are shooting past 400 you are gonna have to dope the scope no matter what,,
out to 7-800 I would get a 260 and past that a 300 Win Mag
if you know the range,have a good scope and work your charts correctly just about anything should work,,
it is all basic math anyhow..

7mm Rem Mag with 168-180 gr bullets will outdo the 300 Mags,,if you could find an LSS or Sendero in 7STW would be ideal
I would love a sendero in 7stw but the budget wont allow it. I'm going to have to start out small with the sps and improve it as I go.

.243 will get You to 1000 yds. easily but You will have to shoot the heavy bullets. I'm having one built in .243 at Short Action Customs right now.
Mine will be built off a Remington action I had lying around but You should think about this if You don't already have one. Instead of getting a Remington SPS for a donor action You should think about a Custom action. A Remington SPS will cost You about 500.00 and you will scrap everything but the action anyways. By the time a gunsmith gets done with it you will have another 250.00-300.00 dollars into it. Your'e getting close to the price of custom action. If you decide to sell it down the road a Custom action will sale for more than one built off a Remington action. Just my .02 cents.

Are you wanting to hit paper at 1000 or are you wanting to hunt at 600-700yds+ punching paper there are many choices that are great I love my .260 but I dont want to be shooting at a deer at 700yds. IMO to hunt that far you need something with "magnum ooomph" I would look into one of the 300's or big 7's.

If you're a reloader the 260 has become very popular in the 1000yd game. Not sure if there's a factory sps chambered in that.
On budget my vote would go sps varmint 308. There is a wide range of factory and reloading options that can get you to 1000-1200yds. I'm workin my way up to it.

I would say the .30 cal group (.308,.338,etc) are tried and true rounds, but don't over look the 7mm mag either. The 7mm will more than likely offer tighter more accurate grouping more consistantly.

it will be hard to beat the 300RUM.
