i love my 22-250 killed two deer last year i was wondering the best round i need to use in it for deer my 7 year old hunts with this gun currently im shooting 45gr JHP my barrel 1:12 or 14 twist its a ruger please all the input i could get will help thank you
 
First off unless you have a special barrel the standard 22-250 twist rate is 1 in 14, which means that you cannot shoot a bullet weight greater than 60 grains. THis late, get a box or two of core lokts, zero the scope, and have at them.

YepI agree The 22-250 is my favorite round, althought I don't hunt deer with it It is murder on P-Dogs turns them into a red mist.
 
Thank you guys very much I have a 7 mag but I'm not as accurate with it as I am with my 22-250 I can cut holes with it an it's a gun my lil boy can shoot when we hunt together so I wanted to be fair to the animal if my lil shoots the deer behind the shoulder I'm good enough with this to shoot in the head but wanted a bullet were I can clean harvest through the lungs an it be ethical for the sport

Buddy killed a big 10 with a 22-250 last year. He was using the Hornady 50gr V-Max. He found the deer, but it didnt drop in it tracks, and there was little to no blood. I shoot the 45gr hp at targets, but would hold out for Core-lokt or V-Max for hunting.
 
I hand load 55 grain Sierra Game King SPBT for my 22-250 and they will do a good job and I have killed several deer with it IF the bullet is placed perfectly. After letting a really nice 9 point get away last year due to lack of blood trail, I won't be guilty of hunting deer with it again. I would recommend (especially with a young hunter) of going with a larger caliber like a .243 due to more forgiveness with shot placement. Good luck to ya!
 
Well I agree with the 243 part lost my job last just started a new so I have work with what I got I killed a big 8pt last year with it dropped it he killed a 6pt last year an dropped but was going to get him a 243 but didn't want to sell the rifle but I will go with the core locks by Remington in 55 grain get him a 243 next year
 
The 22-250 will easily kill deer with the right bullet,but I would stay away from the Vmax and the JHP and HP bullets.Sure it will kill deer,but your asking for trouble when shooting a deer with a 22-250 useing these bullets.Remington 55gr PSP's are pretty common and will get the job done,and as other's have mentioned the corelokts are good bullets too.

Agree with this. I'm a west coast hunter and taking shots 150+ the 22-250 is my choice. TN hunting with that fast flat round and less expansion at shorter distances makes it hard for blood trails and recovery.
 
Well I see it like this I've seen deer shot with a 300 mag with poor shot placement an never been found seen deer shot with a 223 with good shot placement an take a dirt nap I'm going to give it a try killed two last with it just getting input on bullets thanks
 
Sighted the 22-250 today put a piece of2 by 12 behind it blew right through no problem the shoot really good I'm excited for my lil boy come sat morning thanks for all the positive input
 
i went with the 55gr remington core corlokt the had 1/2 inch groups at 100 yrds then i shot it at 200 yrds they did very well pleased with it my lil boy shot it three times 1 in the bullseye an other two 1inch to the right so im very confident in this rifle an he loves it let him shoot whats comfortable for him.
