whats the relation between them and deer ? i have heard the do and don't eat them. i also recently heard the made a good cover scent spray . one of my hunting areas are loaded with them.
 
No they won't eat them... not that I have ever seen anyways. Our place is has a few close to my stand and picking gets slim come late November and December, they wont touch them. They do make great deer decoys though. Deer use them to trick us out. They fall and roll down the hill, bouncing along sounds JUST LIKE a deer bounding off. Gets me every time one falls.
 
They hurt when they fall out of the tree and hit you... If they were preferred food,we would be set!
 
CRAZY!!!!!!

Would have never thought they eat them.. I have never seen them touch them and never seen one that looked like it had been chewed on. Guess they will eat nearly anything when hungry enough.

Use to see them on the ground busted up and wondered if deer ate them. Then I saw a doe bust one up and nibble. That was years ago.
 
I hunt some open feilds and one has an hedge apple tree in it and I have noticed over the past several years most of the deer in my area will go stright to that tree to feed. The does eat the grass around while the bucks will eat the hedge apple only if they have been busted up. I will usually drive my atv in the feild a few days pryer to the hunt and bust the apples up. this is one of my most productive areas.
 
In areas where few other high-quality food sources exist, deer eat them extensively. I've seen deer acting like they were candy out on Oklahoma. But again, few other quality food sources existed in the area. And yes, deer stomp on them to bust them open before feeding on the interior.

But if the choice is between acorns and hedge-apples, or a clover/wheat food plot and hedge-apples, the hedge-apples lose!
