Headed to Alaska in a few weeks. Touring not hunting (Maybe Next Time)!
I want to treat my clothes with permethrin before we leave so we don't have to pack anything for spraying. We may buy something up there but I am hoping I can treat with permethrin at home and get some protection while we are there.

Has anyone tried adding the permethrin to their rinse cycle to get good protection. I've heard you can add to the Fabric Softener cycle or to the rinse cycle.
My question is how much and what concentration?

Any ideas.
 
That works for ticks, not skeeters. Deet and/or smoke is what works for them.

I lived there for several years. We used to joke that in lieu of perfume and cologne, Alaskans wore camp fire & Deep Woods Off, that mosquitos needed heli-pads to land, that bear bells were to let them know it's time to eat, and bear spray was just adding spicy flavor.

I will attest to the deet working miracles on skeeters. I use Deep Woods Off or Repel normally when outside in my yard, camping, fishing, etc and works well. Now when I get in deep in early bow season I reach for the white Repel 100 bottle and spray my ankles, boots, pants legs, waist line, neck, and arms. That really seems to help keep ticks and chiggers off of me. I probably should try Sawyers on my clothes for ticks but Repel 100 has always seemed to do the trick. It is 98% Deet!
 
Depends on what part of Alaska you are going to and what will you be doing??
Deet works best but remember they will still buzz around you, just not bite the areas covered in deet.
Your going in September when most bugs are starting to die off. If your on a tour I wouldn't even worry about bugs.

When do you arrive? The times that I've been to AK backpacking in late August and September weren't bad for bugs. Now June and July are a different matter altogether.
