Having a taxidermist "fix" a broken rack

Just a friendly discussion. I've seen it on TV where a personality shot a very busted up buck then talked about what the score was going to be after the taxi "fixed" the tines. I've even seen several inches added to members' deer (no offense intended).

My opinion is that the condition the deer is in when you pull the trigger is what you have. Now, if I shot a deer and it knocked a beam off running into a tree, I'd have it put back on.

What would you do?

If it were on it when I shot it, I would replace it. If not, the broken tines will add it character IMO. I know a few who have had tines fixed adn they look phenomenal and I have no problem with it.

To your story. The personality talking about the score AFTER the taxidermist fixed the tines is simply trophyism at its worst. Its not "book" scorable but he/she must have felt it would captivate the audience with a bigger score.

Definately not if I had no idea exactly what the tines actually looked like. Now if I killed one of my trail cam bucks, sure I would. Of course it'd have to be an old monster buck for me to shoot it with broken tines and mount it, unless it was a minor break.

If i knew what it looked like sure, if not, that is how it was when i shot it, that is how it will stay.

I've fixed a lot of them. And most of the guys I fixed them for just wanted a perfect deer. I think out of ll the ones I fixed only two broke after the shot. One of which was shot off as a result of a follow up shot the other died and fell off a 30 foot cliff falling on rock. All but one tine was found in both cases.... The rest were just guesses as to what the deer looked like. And yes I've even been asked and paid a time or three to fabricate a drop tine or kicker point to add some "character".


I myself take them as they are wheni walk up and put my hands on them.

I shot a buck with the right side broken off at the base. I have no idea what it looked like and would never want it "fixed". I wish I could have seen his rack intact, I think he would have been a massive 6 pt judging by the left side.

The deer on the right side of this picture had the left browtine broke off, right side facing you. I just had it fixed to match the other one. I wouldn't do one that was busted up alot though.

I am working on one that was almost shot completley off. bullet impacted about were the main beam and G2 meet.

The one on here that was a racked doethat was fixed and revelveted was awesome. I have one I wish I would have had fixed. If it matched it would have been the difference in 155 and 160 even though it wouldn't count

If you have a rack "fixed" in any way, it cannot be scored for entry in any records. However, if I killed one with damage and I wanted it to look "right", I would have no hesitation or feel any guilt in getting it fixed. If it was there at one time, why not put it back to improve appearance.

Sall up to the indervideral. Personally, I kinda like some of them busted up racks.

I keep it just like it was when I shot it. I even try to keep wood shavings that are in the antlers from rubbing if possible.

As with others - it's kept as it's shot.... I would only consider a repair if broken post-shot.

agreed mup - my sons 1st buck had all kinds of shavings embedded in the bases & thats been years ago & they are still there, adds something to it
