Popped on my FB feed...middle TN.

HOLY CRAP, this guy was a mega giant.

2 1/4 and 2 1/16 spurs...

I've never mounted a turkey, even the one I killed with 2in and 1 7/8 spurs. But dang, id have to think hard about whether to mount this guy.

I bet there haven't been more than 10 birds EVER killed in TN with 2 1/4 in spur.

Im still mind boggled by those spurs... almost hypnotized.

Some turkey hunters care about a slam, some like to collect calls, some love beards/ multi- beard birds... for whatever reason, I have an absolute obsession with spurs. F'ing daggers on those legs.

What's crazy.. spur length (over 1 3/8) is inversely correlated with dominance. You dont grow spurs like that if you are a boss bird. Birds that grow spurs like that are old... but they dont fight with other birds to wear them down or break them off. So I dont understand why I am so enthralled with them.

I wish i didn't have to work i would have loved to see them in person. When I first got the picture I thought they were messing with me. I wish we could get an accurate age. That would be fascinating to know.
 
I have seen long spurs before but nothing to match those,if he dont mount that bird I bet he will never mount one!!
 
Funny you say dinosaur because the first time my daughter saw a turkey in our yard (when she was about 4) she thought they were dinosaurs and came running to us yelling there were dinosaurs in the yard.
 
incredible spurs. oddly i never truly valued the beard or spurs on a turkey. Lets face it, most of the time, we dont know how long the spurs are till after the fact. full fan, full gobble = go time. i do value the hunt and the meat though. love turkey jerky

ive been that way for a long while now. Don't get me wrong I love to see the ones that are bigger than normal but I honestly couldn't tell you the last time I ACTUALLY weighed or measured spurs/beard on a bird. If its a full fan I'm all in.

there are 2 spur sizes when I kill 1, either 1" or bigger
there are 2 beard sizes when I kill 1, either 9" or bigger

Now obviously If I killed one with spurs like the joker above I would 100% put a tape measure on them!
 
Called one in backing the mid 90's in Maury co for a friend that looked to be at least 2 inches,he had a automatic gun an eased the chamber shut when he loaded it at the truck an it snapped,he strutted around the decoys 10-15 yards away several minutes before it snapped!wished I woulda been armed that day😉

True for 99.9% of the old birds I have killed. Reading posts on TnD, I have learned some have turkeys that are tolerable enough for hunters to get close enough to scout, visualize and measure spurs for selective harvest. I have never experienced that kind of wild turkey or a turkey hunting environment that was conducive for selective harvest based on spur length.

As long as they have a long beard and are gobbling or drumming or strutting, I don't care. They're all the same to me. Killing the boss tom is cool, but I don't get any more excitement out of it. I, for the life of me, can't fathom when someone says they've been after a particular bird time and time again. I'm just not that in tune with turkeys and not knowledgeable on them I guess. To me they all travel amongst each other and are random. But I don't put the time in either. Deer I do. Turkeys, I just hear a gobble and go. When they are fired up, my heart almost beats out of my chest. Opening day, I had the same feeling I do when a target buck is closing in. It's just awesome. I just haven't studied turkeys as much to know particular bird. The one pictured above, he'd be in a full strut mount 🤣
