Congratulations on drawing the elk tag.

You gonna do like last year or something different?

You take I-40 to Albuquerque and head North?

Jeez, I just realized how very much I miss elk hunting.

sounds like you got a good season coming up. I would love to hunt elk in the west some day. Never gave coues deer much thought, they are just smaller whitetails arent they?

Yeah, they are basically small Whitetails. Smaller than the Virginia stock, but a little larger than Key deer. They are exclusive to NM, AZ and Mexico and notoriously difficult to hunt. Some folks say they are the most difficult deer species to hunt as they often live in difficult terrain, are super flighty and are incredibly difficult to spot, hence their nickname, "The Grey Ghost."

If you get an archery tag for AZ, you can hunt them in January (rut), August and December, though getting within 300 yards of them is supposedly quite the challenge. Rifle tags can be hard to come by.

The area of the Huachuca's is about as good as it gets for Coues - the company I work for has me based out of Sierra Vista, AZ and the wife and I used to drive just outside of town in the evenings and check out the deer.

It's always easy coming into deer season with an elk under your belt, those years my standards was always higher
while deer hunting. Congrats Good
Luck

Are you gonna see how many class 5 rapids you can climb with your gear in CO, or are you gonna try to kill one this year? :)

Good luck!

I bought a leftover tag. It's actually a cow-only tag. Not sure why I said it was either sex. What part of the state are you going to?
