...killed a deer in the waning moments of the final day of the season?

This is something I've always wanted to do but have never had the opportunity since I started deer hunting in 1983.

I would like to hear your story if you have done it!

I hunted with ImThere last year on the last day and he killed one at 260 yards in the last couple minutes of shooting light. My 30-30 would never reach that far and I couldn't hold his gun steady so he shot one, dropped her dead in her tracks. Big ole nanner too

I shot a big 6 the day before season ended.I did feel a little bad thinking that that deer had made it all year and only had to make it one more day and the season was over. The backstraps we're still good though lol

I was buckless in 09/10 until the last 15 minutes of shooting light. I hunted three good bucks at my house all year long and had passed numerous other bucks. I was also packing my 30/30 that afternoon that I had killed my first deer with. The smallest showed up 15 mins before dark. I wrote about it in my milestone post related to that gun if you wanna read. It was a special deer.

i killed on about 7 years ago good buck that last morning. but it takes around a 140 or better or a 6.5 or older for me to pull the trigger the last few weeks of season now.

Like most hunting shows, I killed a deer in the last 15 min of the last day of the season once, but it was a doe

I haven't personally, but I took my father-in-law out a few years ago, and on the last afternoon he shot his first doe with maybe 15 minutes of light left. Pretty cool experience.

Killed a 150 inch ten point at 5:00pm on a Sunday evening. Can't remember if it was the last day or not. I had already killed a nice six and a nice eight earlier in the season. Had the ten on trailcam before the season opened. Had not seen hide nor hair of him all season. He stepped out of a thicket that day and I was ready.

Killed my first one in January this year! A doe. I normally do not hunt very much at all from the 2nd week of December on.

Only once when i was 13. Was the closing evening on the juvenile hunt. Time was running out and had 5 does come across the ridge
Picked one out and got it in the cross hairs and movement on back behind them caught my attention. Turned out to be a nice 8 point! Dropped him! Shot him with 10 min of shooting light left. Definitely a hunt i'll never forget.

They do it all the time on the hunting shows. Heck, I think that's when they kill most of their deer. It'll probably never happen to me since 99% of my hunts are morning hunts anyway. I have killed deer on the last day.

My first deer ever was a small doe shot in the last twenty minutes of the season in 2000. It stepped into a clearing, was looking around and was going to go back into the brush. It cried after I shot it and I could hear some other deer blowing back in the woods behind it afterward. .357 158gr SJSP from a Marlin lever action.

One of my brothers-in-law shot a nice 8-pointer this morning. Today was going to be his last hunt of the year.

The season of 97-98. No acorns on our farm that year. Deer were very hard to come by. I had not killed a deer on the last day of late muzzleloader. I took my climber to a spot on the back of the farm I had never hunted before.

After several hour of nothing, there was about 5 minutes of shooting light left. I thought about getting down and getting a start on the long hike back while there was still some light. I decided against.

Literally with a less than minute of shooting light left I heard a twig snap behind me. Within 10 yards there was a small doe. It was very thick back there and I never saw or heard her coming. I turned around and pulled the hammer back on my caplock. She heard the click and bolted. She made a couple jumps and slowed to a trot. I followed with my muzzleloader and took the shot. I couldn't see anything when the smoke cleared. Within seconds of my shooting there were two shots on the neighboring property.

There was snow on the ground and I was very happy to find heart shot spray in the snow. Easy tracking. My dad was hunting nearby and heard the shot. He helped me pull her out. My dad had cancer and died a few years later. That was my last time hunting with my dad.

At the check station we bumped into my neighbor and his dad. They had shot 2 does which were the shots I heard.

A year later I saw an add soliciting stories from hunters. I wrote this up and sent it in, and they published it in this little book:

Seems like I always get skunked on the final day. Killed a Dow this morning. Closest one to the last day so far.
