We had this cold front coincide with the full moon. Do you think the higher #'s that you see from the 15th on because of the cold front or the moon? I believe the cold front came in Tuesday (?) here in E. TN; but may have started a day or two before that but it got colder as the week went on. I'm a much bigger believer in cold fronts than moon phase; but if you watch the moon phases, what are you looking for and which phases do you prefer?

I imagine there were more people in the woods with the good hunting weather.
 
#'s for last year on Oct 16th and 17th were 307 and 304. That was a Mon/Tues

IMHO, a lot of folks put way too much effort into studying "data", just get your lazy arses in the woods and HUNT! You might be surprised at what can happen!

What? What does looking at stuff when I'm bored to tears at work have to do with being lazy? I'm in a tree right now, it's the 5th time I've been out in the last 7 days. Dragged a doe about 600 yds the other night off a ridge. I was trying to start a discussion, and hopefully gain some insight to moon phases since I know nothing about them.

IMHO..well, I'll keep that one to myself.

After looking at moon data versus buck sightings by hunters over many, many years on my place - at least for my place - I no longer pay much attention to moon phase. Looking at the data (Oh no!), about the only patterns that show up are very slight. For instance, buck sightings are generally higher on a waning moon compared to a waxing moon. Another, buck sightings are at their lowest when the moon is waxing and greater than 40% illuminated (however, this low activity ceases the day the moon is full). Buck sightings are highest on a waning moon when the moon is less than 40% illuminated.

But when looking at the numbers, these higher and lower periods only account for around 10% higher and 10% lower activity levels, respectively. That's not much.
 
As for the increased kills around the 15th and 16th, hard to know if this was from increased buck activity due to the weather, or increased number of hunters in the woods because of the weather.

However, on my place, we see a peak of buck activity every year centered around the 16th of October. This activity includes working scrapes and even chasing does. I saw it again this year. Why does this occur on the same date every year? I really don't know. But my pet theory is that it is a "false rut." I don't think it's a coincidence that this date is one month prior to our traditional peak of buck-doe chases. I suspect one estrus cycle prior to the real first estrus, some does go through a false estrus cycle, where their bodies produce the chemical signals that indicate ovulation. And I think bucks pick up on these pheromones and act accordingly.
 
Heres some interesting data for yall. Ive got 3 bucks on camera in KY that I would shoot, been hunting them since Sept 7th. I hunted ALL DAY yesterday in 2 stand locations. I saw 7 from stand A in the morning. I saw ZILTCH from stand B in the evening. I swapped cards in my cameras and when I checked them last night the best shooter Ive got was under stand B from 730 to 8am yesterday morning. Thats a data point that just plain pisseth me off!
