Didn't even want to go, it was in the 80s, but none of my racquetball partners wanted to play....and my family was trick/treating....and I didn't want to sit on the couch.
As I got to within 50yds of my stand I noted where a buck had come out the other night and decided to peek into the woods to see if I could learn something....I sure did a buck was bedded in there and jumped up and ran off. :bash:
I climbed up into my stand and hoped to see some does. About 530 I caught movement coming in upwind, saw a rack, looked like the 8pt I had seen a couple nights ago that got spooked by the farmer cutting beans. I drew back and my arrow came off the rest....I was able to use my index finger to put the arrow back on the rest....I grunted, he stopped at 25yds and I let it go.
When I followed thru I saw the arrow hit a bit high and back?? He took off like a freight train and sounded like he snapped every tree off as he ran into the woods! I was concerned with the shot placement (possibly liver).....but he was quartering away. I called my son and asked for his help tracking this deer...which meant him giving up his Halloween night festivities.
We waited till dark to track the deer, figuring it would be easier to spot blood that was wet. Blood was consistent, but not huge amounts, I figured because of the hit that the blood was pooling inside the cavity. My son found all but one spot before I did.....there were a few times I would grab the flashlight....only to give it back to him. We found him about 75yds from where I shot him....arrow went in high, came out low taking out one of the lungs.
Thankful that I took my son, his eyes are so much better than mine.....especially when looking for blood in a cut bean field....I think I found one drop of blood before him.
The buck was younger than I thought, 2.5yr old 8pt.
No shooters remorse, primarily because I have a tag for KY and Ft Campbell....so I can be much choosier now, but tough to make decisions when you have a limited window of opportunity to make that decision.
Grateful to God who provides!
