Had an encounter with something weird on the farm.

So I am up in a stand I call the picnic area a couple of days ago, rifle in hand. I had seen a few does here and there but it was pretty slow. About 8:30am I was looking out into the road I had bush hogged when I got a glimpse of something that rounded the corner. It immediately caught my sent from where I had walked in, spun around and vanished. I only saw it for a split second but I knew exactly where it was. It was light gray with long fur and almost a blue tint to it. I saw eyes as it spun but no other detail. I came down but there was nothing. I saw it's shoulder over the grass as it spun so I walked over to it. Based on the height of the grass the shoulders would have been above my hip, around where my elbow is when my arm is at my side, 4' tall or so. It's head was lower than the shoulders as if it were sneaking around the corner. It was completely silent and moved extremely fast. No idea what it was, but I don't feel like it was a dog or domesticated animal. We have no livestock there. We have coyotes, but none that big (I hope).

Going to post some trail cameras along our roads for security after season, maybe I'll get lucky.

Could be a big hog. I don't know where you are located but I was hunting Williamson county near the Rutherford county line a few years back and was walking down a logging road and had something take off running thru the bushes that was big but not a deer. Its stayed close to the ground when it ran, no bounding. All I saw was the top of its back which was brown. It was probably 2 and a half feet to the top of its back. I found out that a game farm had closed years earlier and some wild boar escaped the high fence and were on rare occasions spotted by hunters.

Or it could just be a dog thats weary of hunters

Doubt it was a dog, if it were it would have likely milled around for a couple hours, barking occasionally, and then finding him in the tree and barking some more, effectively ruining his hunt. :evil: :mrgreen:

If you want pics on a trail cam, I'd suggest putting a plate of cookies in front of the cam.

Nope, definitely not cookie monster. Taking the elevation factor into account it may have been a little shorter, but it was still pretty big. I have to work all weekend, but I'm putting my cameras out. I need to keep the area duck hunters/poachers off of our beaver pond anyway.

And mystery solved. An adjoining property owner called just to chat and said that there is an almost completely white piebald doe on my property. He said she has a patch of brown on her left hip. It was overcast and misty when I saw it. I also have old eyes. That would explain the size, color (more or less) and olfactory acuity.
