Had a scope ring snap off while shooting

Anyone ever ad this happen or heard of it happening? I was out shooting my 300 win mag when all of a sudden my rifle started shooting way off and I looked at my scope and the back ring had snapped off and the scope was pushed forward about 3 inches thru the front ring, scratching some paint off the scope.
 
What kind of rings were you using? Model70man had a Leupold STD ring break a couple of years ago while we were shooting.
 
I had a 3.5-10x50 Vari X III on a 300 rum that broke the windage screws and slipped through the front ring,,

Lade had one do the same thing,,when you get up to that kind of recoil,,plus a heavy scope those mounts WILL give up
 
Did it damage the scope other than rubbing off paint?

The rings and bases were the leupold standard rings and bases. The rifle is a rem 700 lss. Any recomendations for rings that won't break? The scope has a 56 mm obj so I need extra high rings.
 
I had a twist-in Burris version of the rings break at the dovetail on a .308 Model 7. The break wasn't readily obvious until accuracy went to pot for no apparent reason. I don't like that type of system although a lot of people use them and they have been around for years. I have gone to the Burris Signature Zee rings with nylon inserts. No problems at all and no ring marks. PH
 
Yep, I had those exact same piece of junk rings and bases and they did the exact same thing. They are crap.

Try the Talley Lightweight one piece mounts instead. You will never have that problem again.

I can understand the rear ring breaking from recoil, but the scope sliding 3" forward in the front one afterwards seems a very strange unless it was the cause to begin with............Loose, and all the work was being done by the rear ring.

I have had crosshairs knocked out of a scope before from recoil, but never a broken ring. I also saw a cracked stock on a Weatherby 300 mag. before from recoil.

I think the reason it slid so far in the front ring was that I did not know the back ring was broken and I shot it a couple of more times before I noticed it. The front ring was tight enough that I could not pull the scope back thru by hand without loosening the rings and they rubbed a good bit of paint off with it. The thing that sucks the most is that even if it did not damage the scope, I was thinking about selling it to get a different scope and I doubt I'd be able to sell it and get a descent price with the paint rubbed off now. Its a nikon monarch gold. I wonder if I can send it back and have them repaint it.
 
Did it actually gouge the tube or just scuff the paint?

If it is only paint damage, you can repaint the tube yourself, tape it off really good, lightly sand/scuff the tube and spray it with a flat or matte finish paint............

It just scuffed the tube. My only concern with doing it myself is that I won't do a good enough job to be able to resell it. I was actually planning on trading it in at SWFA on another scope. I think I'm stuck with it. Don't get me wrong, its a great scope. Its a nikon monarch gold 2.5-10x56. Next to my sightron SIII, its the best scope I have ever used. I was wanting something that was lighter with a 50mm obj. My mouth was watering for a minox z5 3-15x50.
