Had a buck give me the creeps

So this morning the wind was just the opposite of what it was supposed to be. No big deal I just turned around and set on the shooting rail facing away from the food plot to try and catch them coming in. At 9:00 I hear a deer walking my way. Then I see him a big bodied small rack 5 point coming directly to me from my left. Leaves are covering the ground so I could hear every step he made. He was headed on a path that brought him five yards behind me. I knew I was going to get busted because the wind was hitting me in the face. I watched until I couldn't turn my neck anymore at that time he stopped dead in his tracks.(assuming he winded me as expected) My harness strap was on that side preventing me from turning that way so I slowly turned to watch him from my rite but he was not there. Now keep in mind he is in the clearing so there was no place to hide. I know he got out of there somehow but I can't figure out how. It had me spooked a little. I could hear his footsteps as clear as day before he stopped. Then NOTHING. I know it sounds crazy but you would be wondering yourself If you were in that stand.

I've had bucks to where all they have to do is take one step and they are dead. Next thing I know, they are nowhere to be found. Some have just turned and walked straight away and they went from 40 to 100 yards in a matter of a minute and I don't have a shot. Just like a ghost that disappeared.

maybe he smelled you and immediately went from normal walking to ghost stepping that only a deer can do...think how those small pointed feet can slide between the leaves, and somehow deer can do that and be real quiet if they want... or if he was in the food plot, maybe he ran off real quiet across the clearing.

probably walked behind the tree straight away from you. I've seen a stray house cat/feral cat do it on purpose, it saw me in the stand (very good eyesight) and then it used various small trees walking straight away from me to get away.

Maybe you'll see him again. I had a nice 8 point about 10 years ago step into a drain and I couldn't see him at all. It was getting dusky dark and there was no light in the drain. I could hear him but, that was it.

Had a buck spot me hanging in my treesaddle when he was walking up the mtn side,he walk backwards about 3 steps and turned and went head first down hill gone.Put a couple years on our Cumberland platau bucks and they become a breed of there own.

Did you look up the tree, maybe she climbed it ! lol.. I have had them close and disappear like that before.

I've had them "disappear" before too Trigger! Impossible as it seems, I was watching one at about 40 yds, a 4 pt, and he was behind a pine tree in the middle of an old logging road. He kept looking out from behind it at me, and I was going to shoot as soon as he turned broadside, when he would surely be leaving as he was onto me. But after about 5 min I suppose, I hadn't seen him peek out, so I decided to walk toward him, but when I got there he was gone! I never saw the first hyde nor hair of him as he left! :crazy:

Had a doe on a trail that came to within 25 yards of my stand in bow season about 3 years ago. There was a big oak tree right about where I was wanting to "intersect" her. She was steady walking and when her head went behind the tree I drew. That tree was like a magic curtain, she never popped out the other side. Just vanished like the tree ate her. She wasn't spooked or anything, just walking along and gone! Think I held that bow back for an hour :cry:

Tuesday in stand looked down through the grating and a doe was standing right there. How she ever got that close is beyond me. I ware a silk scarf (like the WW1 fighter pilots used) rub my neck raw looking around. And "POOF" she was gone.

What is really creepy is when you hear one follow you in in the morning.

They can turn on leaf silencers on their hoofs and walk away while keeping a tree between you and them. Also, their hair can reflect light in such a way that when motionless they vanish from human vision until they move again. Its spooky how invisible they can become when they want to.

Southern hunter, There were 3 of us watched a basket 8 walk up to a huge oak tree laying on ground, we were 40 yards directly behinf the root ball. He never came out. I actually looked for a hole int eh tree, thinking he musta climbed in there.
