Has anyone had a problem with H4198 not igniting? Here is situation I started out using H4198 this year,went to range sighted in rifle shot around 10 rounds total,no problem. Go opening weekend shot doe and spike,no problem. Left ML loaded for a week went hunting Wed. doe in sight,pull trigger funny sound thought I saw bullet and sabot go out end of barrel,but no boom,put another primer on,nothing other than what sounded like powder going out barrel,put on another primer snap,primer sounds normal.Go home disassemble and clean,no problems I could tell so I reassemble,go hunting this morning,no opportunity to fire but decide to fire to unload,same problem no boom. Best I can tell powder is not igniting. Any ideas???
 
Bullet was blown out from primer going off,but powder did not ignite. I have read the H4198 is a little temperamental in cold climate,but IMO its not been that cold.
 
No offense, but if that bullet isn't seated on the charge (halfway up the barrel) and you get the powder to ignite people will be calling you stumpy.

I had this problem once this year during a range session, I used a bit to much antiseize and it somehow squeezed into the flash channel and blocked the vent liner. I couldn't even hear the primer pop, just the firing pin falling.

May not be your problem, but check it out.
 
I pulled breach changed vent liner and checked bullet depth with ram rod,all was ok. Convinced primers are not hot enough,but till I can find some magnum primers to test theory I'm glad gun season starts tomorrow.
 
I prefer to use Fed 209As. They are the hottest 209 primer on the market with the CCIm right behind them.

4198 is what i shoot but with 10 gr of n-110 under it and mag 209s.This will solve your problem as it did mine. In cold temps and if you dont unload you rifle everday you could and will at the worse time have this problem. Some will say they have been shooting 4198 for 10 yrs with never a problem but after only one day i also had this problem so go to dougs message board and read what they say about this problem.
 
I "reseat" the load before I go out every morning, lean on it good. I've tested without and get a failure every now and then in very cold weather even with mag primers. Every one I have "reseated" goes bang.

10gr. SR4759 under a reduced main charge would solve the problem, but in this gun the straight H4198 shoots lights out so I haven't messed with changing it yet.
 
Thanks for input,barkscraper how many grains of 4198 are you using in addition to the n110 duplex and is the duplex still necessary if you use the hotter primers and H4198 only,I would like to keep it as simple as possible,I'm not too bright.LOL
 
Regardless of what powder being used if the primer igniting pushes the saboted round out of the barrel then it is too loose. You must find a tighter fitting sabot/bullet combo. Ignition problems will disappear.
 
Mine had been loaded for 22 days when I shot it on Thanksgiving morning when it was 14 degrees.........went boom as it always does........I do lean on it with a ramrod about once a week though just to make sure it's still packed in there good and tight. If it's colder than it was Thanksgiving morning then more than likely I'm staying in the bed, lol.
 
In my 45 i use 50gr h4198 and 10gr n110 Go to ebay and you can buy the little plastic viles with plastic lids that work great I was afraid of the duplex also but once i started its no problem. You have any problem with the viles let me know.
