I heard that if you buy a H&R shotgun you could not buy rifle barrels for it, but if you buy a rifle you can buy shotgun barrels...is this true???

Correct. The rifle receiver's steel is heat treated to withstand the higher stresses and pressure of high powered rounds and the shotgun's is not. If it didn't turn loose completely I'd say that after a few rounds a shotgun receiver used with a rifle barrel would start stretching until headspace was a problem. It's hard enough to get H&R's to headspace without a lot of flexion and case stretching even with the good steel because of the design.
