H&R slug gun?

I'm looking at getting a slug gun, and I never trust reviews off of cabelas or bass pro (too many people get paid to leave reviews on products they have never seen). I'm interested in the single shot H&R slug gun, anyone ever fooled with one? Looks to be pretty well priced, but you wonder if you get what you pay for.

Here's mine. I absolutely love it. Would buy another in a heart beat. The only issue I've had was finding rings high enough for my scope to clear the hammer. It's also pretty heavy. Bought it in 2010, killed my first doe on Percy Priest WMA this year. Shot her at 50 or so yards.

Had one couldn't get it to group tried different sluggs and other trickes that I was told to try. Got rid of the heavy thing and never looked back. If you get one I hope you have better luck.

I zeroed mine at 50 yards and got decent groups out to 100 with 20 ga Hornady SST's. I've heard that it is difficult to get good groups with 12ga. My goal with this gun was never to shot at anything far beyond 100.

Find the right load and the H&R is real good out to 150 yards.Best advise for finding that load.Try the 1200-1500fps 2 3/4 loads first.Then work up.

Yeah they are heavy,but when you shoot 15-20 rounds you will appreciate the weight.

I have owned one for about 15+ yrs, it has been a very accurate gun. I have taken deer out to 110 yds. I had to try several brands of slugs before I found the ones it liked best, it settled for the Remington Solid Copper Sabots.

I can get less than 1.5" group at 100yds.

Only drawback..................it is heavy.

Great guns in 20 guage. Junk in 12 guage. I have a bunch of friends that live in Illinois and every one of them say the 20 is a way better slug for deer no matter what gun you shoot it from.

Have owned both the H&R and NE and both are as good as it gets,accuracy wise.Most people who cannt group with them either havent found the right load,have developed a flinch or the mounts,rings or scope are cheap.Mounted with the right mounts and rings is essential.No place here for cheap scopes.

At this time the H&R and a 1187 Remington are in my safe.
The H&R loves Winchester Hi Impact 2 3/4 load at 1250 fps.
Trouble is they dont make em any more.

The 1187 shoots them well also.My stock of this is almost gone so last year i started looking for another load for the 1187.
Have never been a fan of 3in loads but the Remington Aero Tip,the green one,will shoot under 2 in at 100 yards and about 4in at 150.Probably do better with younger eyes also. :grin:

I have an old 6 power Weaver on my H&R.Dont laugh,the old Weavers are very reliable.On my 1187 a Kahles 3X9 is mounted.Both have taken 100s of slug rounds and hold up nicely.

The H&R actually shoots a little better than the 1187.

I use to own several H&R, NEF's. The one thing I have learned you can go through a thousand rounds trying to find the right load for one and about the time you do the dang thing will change and you have to start over again. I have two left a 30-30 that I like to play around with cast bullets with and a 357 max. that is a farly good shooter and a good deer round. I think a good gun should shoot any thing you put in it at least farily well and I don't belive that is not most H&R,s or NEF,s.
