I'm putting this in the QDM forum because I'm looking for scientific answers....what are the survival odds of a gut shot deer? It seems with a gunshot it would mean near certain death, but with an arrow? Just curious, I remember seeing photos of broadheads covered with scar tissue from single shots that were non-fatal, but don't remember gut shots being discussed much...

Gut shots are indeed fatal but it results in a long, slow, and painful expiration. You gutshoot a deer... you need to back off
the idea of tracking for a minimum of 4-6 hours. An arrow shot to the gut will result in a short jump with an arching back. It may walk or run away with its legs being spread out more than normal. Actual gut material, food material (indicative of a stomach shot), greenish intestine material, and even droppings may be found with little or no blood sign. Arrows will have a distinct foul odor present. Blood if any is almost black in color. Hairs are generally white and coarse. They will usually head towards water if it�s near. They may travel 100 yards or more and usually bed down and chew their cud until they expire.

from a scientific standpoint, if you perforate the intestines, allowing contents (and all the bacteria that go with them) to spill into the abdomen, sepsis will result within 2-3 days, overwhelming the deer and causing death. It is possible to hit a deer a little high or low, missing the intestines, and the deer can survive. Often with 'gut-shot' deer, some of the mesenteric arteries are severed as well, which will allow the deer to die a little quicker (say within a few hours, as opposed to days).
Obviously, it's the archer's (or rifleman's) bane... an animal which is difficult to recover, but almost certain to die slowly.
