Gunsmith question

Any of y'all a gunsmith? I have an old old .22 semi auto, I think it's a Sears and Robuck (I'd look but out of town now). This gun is pretty nice to shoot, but it misfires a LOT. Hammer strikes the rim, but must not do it hard enough. Is there something I can do? Is it just in need of a new spring or something? I'd rather fix it myself before I have to pay someone.

The 22 semi-autos get a lot of powder residue everywhere. I'd dismantle it and clean everything. Look at the firing pin and be sure it moves freely in its slot and the metal is not corroded or worn away.

Brownells is one place to go for parts. There are a few others, escaping me at the moment.

I agree with DaveB, in my experience "most" misfires are either caused by a dirty action or a slightly bent firing pin.

If its the gun I am thinking about then its based on a Winchester 190 and those guns are notorious for the barrel nut backing out causing slop between the bolt and barrel. Its a fairly easy fix if that's the case.

I vote also for dirt and crud in the action being the most likely suspect for this problem. All that grit adds a lot of friction that absorbs much of the firing pin energy and prevents reliable firing. If you want the lazy man's technique I have seen it work to soak the fully assembled barreled action in a bucket of kerosene for a day or two. That is mainly for somebody who is reluctant to tear their gun apart - it's always better to do a full tear down and cleaning if you can.
