I'm in the same boat and I'm thinking about a browning A-Bolt in 270 WSM. The composite stalker is only 6.8 lbs and i've read good things about them.

That's above average for a good WT gun. So many good ones out there ........ I would be partial to a Weatherby in that cal. Don't stick a Walmart scope and rings on it. Quality optics and mounts are a must. That cal can and will reach out a long way.

Winchester model 70 FWT. in 270.You can always find ammo and the new FN rifles are shooters.I have one and it is awesome.But get a good rifle use good mounts and glass on it.

For a Brand New rifle you can't go wrong with a Tikka T3 Hunter. They are excellent rifles with Sako barrels. Browning A-bolt and Ruger M77 are nice as well. I'm partial to Winchester Model 70 rifles though. They are tried and true hunting rifles designed for hunting. No need for after market triggers, barrels, and stocks. Get some nice bases and rings then get a nice scope and you are ready to go. I would go with a .270 Winchester.

Buy a used Remington 700 from the 80's or older, in the caliber of your choice. Take the 400.00 dollars you save, put whatever you were going to spend on a optics with it, and buy you a quality scope and rings. Now you have the best combo money can buy.

This GRP is from a out of the box stock Remington 280.
Actually you can see these are the very first grps.
And factory ammo, no fine tunning.

Remington 700 in whatever caliber tickles you. Here is a 5 shot group out of my 270 Mtn rifle with cheap Remington Core-Lokt's

Two 200 yd groups with a Browning A-bolt Micro 308. Interbond is slicker and drops less than the Interlock

100 yd group with a Winchester Model 70 270 WSM.

Tikka T3 Hunter 260 Rem 100 yd group

Winchester Model 70 7mm WSM 100 yd group.

I love my Winchester M70 also.

Model 70 hands down. Or a Gamemaster from Remington but I've been wanting a 70 for a while, either in .308 or 300WSM. 270WSM would suffice
