i am in great need of a gun safe..i have about an 800 budget...i was wondering what you guys thoughts are on safes and what i should look at

i found one at academy sports that is a canon scout for 619.00

any help would be greatly appreciated...

Why? Dial combination safes do not have a back up way to get in to them (some may but the ones I looked at didn't). Electronic ones have a back up keys and most of them you can access the battery without having to get into the safe so if it goes dead all you have to do is change it and then it will unlock.

I was all for the dial safes until I went to buy one and dicks this years black Friday and half of the display ones had busted locks so the people there to buy them could not open them to check them out and then dicks refused to pull more down from the back to check them out. Everyone waiting ended up leaving due to this.

I ended up going to walmart and I asked to look at the safe they had on sale because none were on display. In less than 10 minutes they had me one to check out. There were some small things wrong which seemed to occur in shipping so I asked to see another. They allowed me to go back to the back and told me I could check out both of the 2 they had back there. Thanks to the good customer service and electronic lock with back up keys I ended up getting it there.

Long story short. Get an electronic one unless the dial comes with keys too.
 
A friend of mine bought a Cannon from tractor supply and has been locked out twice. The first time he called Cannon and they told him what to do. The second time he did what Cannon recommended and it still wouldn't open. He had to call a locksmith. Bulldog25, did the safes with busted dials have S&G locks?

I'm probably going to get hammered but here it is: I was set to buy a Cannon a couple months ago and a buddy advised me against it and told me to look at the Winchesters. My budget was similar to yours and I looked at everything out there. For $800 or less you can't beat the Winchesters. The comparable Cannon has 4 locking bolts. My Winchester has 12. Go to TSC and compare the 2 side by side. It won't take you long to realize that the Winchester is a much more secure, better made safe. I got mine on Black Friday for $549 plus tax. I was hesitant about the electronic lock as well, but so far I love it. Good luck.
 
I really like the Winchester I got from TSC as well. It was slightly more $ than the Cannon but has more bells and whistles. It was a little smaller than some of the others but weighed a lot more which I like.
 
Btw, the 24 gun safes might hold 24 single shot shotguns. Maybe. But you start putting in scoped guns, tactical stocks, etc, you won't get near that. I only needed room for 12 long guns so it worked out.
 
When I got my safe we had two very small children in the house. So I didnt want to leave a home protection pistol accessible to the kids , so it had to be locked up. I got a safe with a keypad. I could get into it in a couple of seconds and could do it in the dark. You cant do that with a combination lock.

This is so true. I have 5 long guns in my 32 gun safe and they take up 1/3 to 1/2 of it. May fit 32 22s or bb guns but it ain't fitting 32 guns especially with scopes, etc.

Also mine is a Stack On and it is the same quality as comparable Cannon and Winchester safes. If you could hold out I would wait til black Friday next year (I wanted a safe for Christmas 2012 and asked for money/gift cards to buy it and then decided to wait til black Friday this year). You may be able to find a good deal on one now though.
 
Personally I prefer Fort Knox and want a S&G dial lock (No electronics) but then ANY safe is better than no safe. IF I couldn't spend more than $800, I'd just go to a few local stores and see what was the most I could get for the money. Door thickness and fire rating would be two points I would look at in particular.
 
I have the 24 gun Winchester with electronic lock and 12 bolts from TSC, like it a lot. Use one side for long guns and shelves on the other for storing important documents and ammo. Handguns and magazines on top shelf.
 
If you can find one that fits your budget, get the 6 footer. The extra foot of space up top is great for extra storage room for anything from pistols to important documents, to the wifes jewelry...very useful. That said, I have a Yukon Gold 39 gun safe, made by Browning, in the 6 ft version, and am very happy with it.
 
When I bought my safe I didn't have enough cash for the one I wanted so I asked if they would be willing to trade on a couple of 12 gauge shotguns plus cash and they traded with me. That was with J Floyd's in Sevierville.

Good advice, I too have the 6 ft tall by 4 ft wide Cannon, which is way more than $800 but I absolutely love it. My advice on safes is to save your money and wait until you can buy a quality safe regardless of brand name. A cheap safe is a cheap safe no matter who makes it!
