I ran across a guy a couple of months ago with a collection of guns he was selling. This gun caught my eye and I offered to buy it. He called me today and told me that if I wanted it he was ready to sell so you know how that goes.

I have no clue about this gun. I've done a little research on it back when I first saw it but I didn't turn up much in the little search I did. I thought some of you guys might know something about it or where would be the best place to get some information at.

It appears to be a 16 gauge. The history I have is it's from Germany near WWII when it was brought back to the states... and that's it pretty much. I would imagine this gun is from the late 1800's. It is a wire wound barrel. The pictures show the only marking I can find on the gun. I have not taken the butt plate off looking for anything. The letter marking appears to be L C.

Any help would be appreciated.

From what I've seen on damascus barrels this is not it. I don't know much about shotguns of this age. They have a textured feel/look to them but not detail. The damascus barrels I have seen have had great detail... this is wire wound which may be the same thing? I don't know. I'm just going on what I have read. I'll try to look more into them tomorrow when I have more time.
 
From what I have seen on the internet... it does appear to be German made somewhere around 1850-1870? It appears to be carved bone on behind the trigger for the grip. There is something on the rib I can't make out due to wear. It appears to have 17.0 stamped on the barrel but that's a guess.

I'm not thinking it's a high dollar gun. I would just like to know a little more about it. I bought it to have as a conversation piece and hopefully pass it down one day if my wife and I are ever able to have any children.

So far I have learned it's what they consider a 16 gauge. It is a German made gun. The piece behind the trigger is bone. It was made prior to 1891 when they started proof marking weapons. The barrels are being called Damascus by the people sharing the information with me. You can tell it's metal wound barrels but I thought Damascus was different so I'm still not sure about this.

I have no clue the value. I was told it was at least $300 to $500 as a wall hanger. I guess it can only go up from there but I'm not holding my breath.
 
Take it to Las Vegas to the Pawn Stars guys. They will bring in an expert to tell you what it is. Then you and Rick can haggle, and you can tell him that it isn't worth what he is offering to sell your family heirloom.

Would that stamp of 1252......be december of 1852?
 
If you go by other guns made in that time frame then it is. I just haven't found out for sure so I can only hope.

The "V" stamp on the barrel means it was prior to having them proofed. That started in 1881 or 1891 according to where you read.

I cleaned it up a little the other day. I can see a little of a few letters from the makers name on the rib. I just haven't been able to match it up with anything yet.

It kinda looks out of place in the man cave with all the fishing stuff.
