Gun Help Needed

Hey guys,

I am currently using a Remington 700 7mm for my deer rifle and i would like to purchase another rifle. What could i get that would offset that 7mm? Would a .308 be a good round or is it to similar? All suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm assuming you are referring to a 7mag correct.
A 7-08 would be perfect for another go to rifle.
If you reload, you can use the same bullet.
Once you get in the mind set and start shooting the 7-08, you'll probably use it more often. JMO

you just opened a can of worms
what other types of hunting do you do?
do you hunt the fields alot or the woods mostly ?
there is a world of difference between a 308 and a 7 mm and that mostly depends on whose hands it is in
you are looking at a short action verses a long action with your stated choices and that is the shooters choice

go look at several and check how they fit you and how they feel
and remember that the weight is going to change as you add a scope sling, etc
work the action to see how it feels
the only specific caliber that i would say is a 30-30
everybody should have at least one
the ammo is readily availiable everywhere and fairly cheap
and just plain fun to shoot

Get a .243, it will kill deer cleanly and your groups will shrink when you start shooting a gun that don't kill on both ends.

Have to admit that I have loaded for a 7 mag and a 300 Weatherby Mag. Recoil on the 7 has a sharper POP to your shoulder. Picture getting hit by Ali (7) on your shoulder with a right jab. Then picture Shaquile Oneal(300) putting his hand on your shoulder and pushing you backwards. The 7 really does kill on both ends. Haven't heard that in a long time.

What kind of hunting will the other rifle be for. If you like your 7mag or 7mm08 which ever it is you have, then IMO another 7mm is rediculous. I would look for a lightweight .243 or on the other end of the spectrum a .338 ruger or 35 whelen or maybe just a good old 30-30.

If you don't reload the 308 is an excellent choice. Ammo is everywhere and not nearly as expensive as 7mm Rem Mag ammo. You will leave the 7mm Rem Mag in the safe and most likely sell it because you wont shoot it or take it hunting anymore if you get a 308.

If you reload, 260 Rem is what I would opt for instead of the 308.

Get a lever gun in 30-30 if you are looking for cheap ammo. Get a levergun in 45-70 if you reload and want a fun rifle you can hunt anything that roams this planet and I'm sure some alien beasts as well!

I'd say the felt recoil was different because of differences in the stocks of the two rifles. Assuming the 300 Weatherby was a Weatherby Mark V, those stocks are well shaped/sized to reduce felt recoil. I have one in 460 that makes even a 500 grain bullet at 2,600+fps tolerable. All else being equal the 7MM mag would kick less since it launches the same weight bullet about 300 fps slower than the 300 Weatherby.

I had a guy tell me that his 338 Win MAg kicked harder than my 460 one day. He shot my rifle several times that day but I never got to shoot his. Honestly, I think he was just trying to be macho about the 460 Weatherby because, make no mistake about it - it kicks. I shot a full box of 20 rounds one day and my arm was going numb but that big, fat stock with the forward sloping cheekrest and extra wide butt pad do help.
