I took an old 12 Gauge that was handed down to me out for the dove opener and had not gotten around to cleaning yet. I looked at it today and it had ALOT of rust built up on it. I mean ALOT. I immediately grabbed gun condition from a cleaning kit and worked some of the rust off.

Question is why is that happening is it an older gun thing? I usually pull a patch or two my shotgun after I duck hunt each time but don't clean it hard at all until after the season and it never rusts up like this?

Second question is what do I do to prevent this? What products do you use to prevent rust and to store gun. I only use it once or twice a year tops rest of the time I store it.

I am really amazed at how much rust built up on it. You would have thought I hunted in the rain and left it in a wet gun case for this amount of rust to build up. Thanks for the input.

Not sure why it rusted unless it got damp. I hunted Labor Day and the following Saturday with a Browning 12 gauge that belonged to my granddad so I have no idea how old it is. Anyway I didn't clean it until last Saturday so it was almost 2 weeks and there was no rust on it. I use Remington gun oil. She's now back in the safe and won't be back out until the dove opener next year.

A year ago, dove season opener, I used a Rem mod 58 that I bought
in 1960. I have used the gun alot, and there has never been any rust on it. Well last year it was just damp out for only about two minuted.

I wiped the gun down and put it in its case. Took it home and two days later opened it up to clean it and, to my supprise the
action was frozen, would not work. I took the barrel off and found that there was a small, real small amount of rust in the
magazine. This had never happened before.

Instructions say not to oil this area. I took a wire brush and
cleaning fluids and cleaned everthing. Put it back together and
two days later took it back apart and cleaned everything again.

I don't know why it done this so easy as the gun had been used
at sea level for many years and never any rust.

I will never use it it Tennessee again with out cleaning it the same or next day.

Hope you get yours cleaned and free of rust.

I am just as mad as heck about it. It was mint until this. Now it has some small pitting and other blimishes. I just can't imagine how it happened so quick. It wasn't in the barrels either it was all over any part that was medal. Heck the bronze looking trigger is probably the worst of them?? I already cleaned it one I will check and make sure it doesn't come back every couple days.
