My father in law has a number of guns (mainly rifles) that were damaged in a flood in MS. they were family guns and he has taken on the job of repairing them. He and my mother in law are in the process of moving back to MS and he is not going to be able to blue the barrels until he gets back.

He has the stocks separate from the barrels and guts and is wondering what he can put on the barrels and internal parts to make sure no rust builds on them until he can blue the barrels.

What he is wanting to do is coat them with some type of oil to be sure they stay rust free until he can blue them. I told him Rem oil, but he is wanting something a bit heavier. Is that necessary and if so what can he use?

Spray them with break free and check them every once in a while until he can blue them. Must keep a good check on them until he can get the work done on them.

What is break Free and where do you get it?

I have done a few home reblueing jobs myself, if my memory serves me correctly, you need to have the entire surface oil and debris free for the blueing to take effectively.

Metal being a porous material, I would be a little hesitant of coating the surface and leaving it to soak into the metal. It will be very difficult to get the oils out of the pores later on.

I now this may sound strange, but try and locate the silica packets and vacuum seal all the parts with a food sealer, just drop several packets in each pouch before vacuuming and sealing it. No air, little moisture.

I'd use Bore Butter if they were my guns. It's mostly used on blackpowder rifles. I believe this would work great in his situation.

Although I posted above, if you are unable to vacuum seal the items, bore butter would be by choice as well. Then wrap in wax paper and place in large plastic bags.
