Oh I know there is more it's just a disappointment when you see somebody holding him. Just think the potential that this deer had. He is likely 2.5, by 4.5 he could have been huge. However I guess that could be said for most deer.

That's how the cookie crumbles some times with fair chase whitetails. I'd wage a bet that 95% of TN Deer Hunters are not going to let that buck walk. There is nothing wrong with this in my opinion, just something to be aware of and not fool yourself into thinking otherwise. How many times had you seen him while hunting and let him walk?

Who killed him? If that person had permission to hunt there, I say congratulations to him. If you want to save deer like that for yourself, then don't allow anyone else to hunt. Sure looks like a shooter to me.

This is exactly what I asked in my original response, but have yet to get a reply. Letting a buck walk and not having a chance is two completely different scenarios. As hunters, we cannot expect other hunters to do as we do. That is just not right, not realistic, and incredibly ridiculous to assume. Not being a horses rear when stating this, but congrats to the fortunate hunter who killed him.

In my opinion a quality deer is not a specific size or score. It's more about killing an older deer which is directly related to the size of the deer.

Sorry bud I would have killed that deer as well. Look at the one who shot it he has meat and some cood horns to boot as well. Fair chase deer will get killed. Just like button bucks will get killed. Yes killing buttons hurts the buck population.

Hunters dont always hunt for horns. You made the right call for yourself to let it walk. But it was a risk.

As deer get older they are going to get bigger as well. Therefor if you strive to kill mature deer you are in most cases going to be shooting bigger deer. I don't think that there is a magic number to go by. Some deer may top out at 130, and some others may get to 130 at 2.5 or 3.5. Those ones that are 120 at 2.5 years old are the ones that might be 180 at 4.5.
