Anyone ever planted these?

A good friend in ky plants them, says deer wear the out, the tops and root too,
they can grow 18" deep. With all the no-till planting compaction is a concern
these days, and cover crops like these are popular as they build nitrogen and
breakup the hard pan.

I planted 4 acres of them this year, with my thin soil ridges I don't disc,
No-tilled 26.5 acres starting this past Friday

I no tilled one acre in very deep woods two weeks ago with daikon radishes. They are already popping up thanks to some 10-10-10 and only a few hours of sunlight. For plots in the middle of the woods, I can't imagine planting much else in the future. They have been somewhat effortless so far.

I broadcasted 5 acres of daikons(tillage variety) the last week of august. They appear to be doing great I fertilized with 13-13-13 last Saturday, the heavy dues are taking care of them, but a good rain will make them shoot

I believe that is what I am planting this weekend. I have a good mix but decided to add them in. I hopoe it works for the rasons you gave.

Do you mind going into more detail regarding how you prepared the area before planting? This sounds interesting but just wondering how you go about it and if you must have completely bare ground. I have an area I would love to plant but never have due to the inaccessibility of the location.

A good stiff rake would do

Honestly, I grabbed an old chain link fence, tossed on some cinder blocks and towed it behind my Honda ATV. It worked as well as a disc. It was the easiest planting I've ever done and no soil test. I also seeded with RYE grain to prevent over grazing.

The radishes barely need 1/4" depth to grow and they do well in TN's clay soil. Again, they are ideal for Deep woods plots. I own a 4x4 tractor and I couldn't get to this particular plot without an atv.
