Greenbelt application

My dad and I just bought 52+ acres in Decatur County. It has been in the Greenbelt program for years but according to Tennessee law we have to reapply. The land is part of an old farm and we plan to use it and its one room log cabin as a hunting place. There are about 13 acres of old agricultural field that have grown over with native grasses. We plan on putting in about 6 acres of food plots. The rest of the land is grown over with timber. It can be select cut in a few years.

One statement on the applications says," Please explain what your plan is for this tract for the next 10 year period." We obviously want to keep this in Greenbelt as it dramatically lowers the taxes.

Any suggestions on what to put here? What are the magic words? What words do I stay away from? Any ideas and help would be most appreciated.

I just put timber management/wildlife management or something to that effect. Never had any trouble at all with it. Morgan County required me to have a forester do a forest management plan, Fentress didnt.

I would also put timber management down. If they want a plan I would put down I was planning on select cutting the timber in about 10 years.

I don't know if it depends on county. But in Morgan County there is two ways to go. One is forestry greenbelt, you have to have someone come in and draw you up a plan. Most people I talked to charged around $700. I found a lady that did it for me for much less.

The other is agriculture greenbelt, I think the only requirement is the property has to have some pasture or fields.

Seems like on Ag land you have to provide proof of income each year of like $1500, I think.

I have some in Greenbelt with a timber plan, they are basic plans
not hard to do, you don't have to show income yearly.

Any recommendations on verbiage on this 'basic plan'? Just don't want to screw anything up.....

I have both ag and timber greenbelts, and I have never had to show income.

I have a greenbelt through timber management on my farm in Carroll County. Our area forester help me create a timber management plan. He asked my priorities and gave me a good balance between wildlife, timber investment, and erosion control. His consultation was a free service available to all landowners. I never had to send the plan into the county, but it has been a good tool for choosing TSI areas along with planning future thinning cuts.
