Great article on oak ecology

This was one of the better articles I have seen on oak ecology. It is second nature to a lot of you, but very good info for some folks just starting out. I learned a couple of things, so it was worth the read.

Thanks for sharing! I am terrible at this stuff but I like to read and pretend I'm gaining knowledge. I guess there is no substitute for time afield to apply some of what you read.

Good read. Red oaks are king at the start of bow season and the late gun season. I know the article said shumard oaks drop very late, but from my experience, a few trees will drop very early, and I've had success in the first week of season hunting those early ones.

When I hunted the Mississippi delta swamps back in January, the hottest food source was water oaks which still held some of their leaves (they are semi-evergreen in the Deep South). The acorns are small and very high in tannin, but when it's the only acorn around, they eat em just like they do a white oak.
