I drove up to Hiawassee Refuge this morning just to get out of the house since I'd been sick and quarantined all week. I had never been up there before but when I got there, they said they were having the Sandhill Crane Fest today and I'd have to go ride a bus in order to check it out. Having just gotten out of quarantine, I decided it probably wouldn't be a good idea to cram in a school bus so I ended up just driving back home. Looked like a nice place though!

Yes in the hop-in area near gooch unit e
For whatever reason they love that area.
They come off the refuge and scatter among the corn fields around the area.

Never seen as many as in that picture though lol

The first time I went, we tried to stake out their overnight roosting spot and pick a couple off as they flew over. Turned out to be bad strategy, but that's what it looked like. Thousands of birds taking off. They scatter throughout the day, but gather back up to roost in a field for the night.
