With the 2016 Turkey opener looming, the thought of setting trailcams are not to far after that. I am in the peak of 2016 winter scouting picking new spots and exploring newly found spots of 2015 further. I have been playing with marking up maps, measuring distances, topography layouts, and how they relate to what ive found. I've obtained a few more trail cams and ill be able to survey spots better to make a choice on how much effort i want to invest in hunting areas based on whether or not my opinion of shooter deer exist in the area. Google earth has a ruler options that aid in this. According to experts, it is recommended 1 trailcam per 100acres for smaller tracks and 1 trailcam for 160 acres for larger tracts. The example I mocked up to simulate how a hunter can guesstimate trail cam placement to get the most coverage of a property is LBL. The outline is approx. 3000 acres. Each circle is around 175 acres each. as you can see roughly 12 trail cams in this section would be a good number to survey this area. Hopefully this can help you when trail cam season approaches and you start to survey the potential of bucks on your property.

When would you run the census, late summer? Would you run them during season? Specific to public land

I would start mineral licks at the sights selected beginning of april maybe im not sure on that. but i do know i wouldnt place cams out until July 8th because bucks would be near top of their potential yet have a little more growing to do. basically by that time i would know if i would want to shoot it or not. Im not a trailcam survey expert but the tool i've mention should help hunters with covering the land they're interested in hunting.

That's a lot of woods and ground to cover.

not at all if you run only 4 cams you can have that covered before opener if you start July 1st and let each came set for around 20 days each then rotate the cams to next for spots and let sit for 20 days then rotate one last time only to pull all the cams around mid september with 2 weeks to analyze the pics and spots you want to focus on lol

What was the name of the book you mentioned sometime ago that helped you learn to read maps? I bought one on Amazon recently but can't remember the name of it here at work.
