One of our guys killed an 8 pointer this morning....2 1/2 years old...scored 142 1/2. At 5 1/2 he would have been 200 or better. No pics or the story yet but the guy had pics of him. He should be on the Ames sight soon.

140 8 pointer is a good buck but only 2 1/2 makes him a potential monster.

I side with this to a degree I've seen some big 2.5 year olds. But, i have never seen one in that range usually there lacking mass and little length. But, could be.

There was this buck killed yesterday and another member killed a 5.5 year old scored 123+. Goes to show there are huge ranges in antler scores. I believe we will move more toward age based evaluation in the future. Congrats to both hunters.

I killed a 5.5 eight that scored about 142, maybe that is all he scored at 2.5. Too many variables to make those assumptions. However, any 8, that measures over 135 is a dandy.

I also agree. That projection is if all things remained the same and his same growth rate continued down the road. I doubt it would have but at any rate, I think he still would have put on more growth and still would have been a much bigger buck. I wish more of our bucks would follow suit or grow "outside the box" like that one.

Up to 3.5, you can od a pretty good job of aging one by the teeth. It is after that it gets dicey. A 2.5 is easy to age.

I don't want to start a debate but I think we should note the (+) at the end of 2 1/2. I think sometimes we get fixated on the number 2 1/2 but forget that there is some variance and he could possibly be older. The assumption of his age could have been influenced by his diet or geographic location. I am not saying that he is not 2 1/2 just saying that we should keep in mind that he could be 3 1/2. I have seen the deer in numerous pictures and he is a dandy for sure and worth taking. Congrats to him.

I think he's sending a tooth off for aging because he can't believe he's only 2 1/2 either. Turns out he had no history with this buck. He walked in, found a spot that he said was torn up with sign, and shot him.

Where was it? :) sounds like an amazing deer! Stuff like that keeps you wanting to go back.

I've found some spots with great deer sign or lots of sign from smaller deer, but I haven't found any tremendous big buck sign. Still, I think I've got a couple of spots that will work well for rut hunts (travel corridors). Stories like this keep me dreaming!

Agreed. Clarification on this deer for the record. It was a mainframe ten with 3 kickers. 13 total scorable points. He had 32 inches of mass. High potential 2.5+ usually lack that type of mass.

I also know that that most deer, not all, put on more inches of antler the older they get, whether it be mass, more antler points, length, or everything, like I said I find it hard to believe it was 2.5, I have disagreed with several deer as far as score and age with the so called prestigious Ames biologist, now as far as the world record comment , it was more of an exaggerated comment even though I do believe a deer if it was that young with that much antler then at 5.5, it could be one of the higher scoring deer to come out in awhile
