Squirrels are everywhere saw 11 on daily run yesterday and that was at midday. To boot, every hickory tree I run under is flat loaded. I will post some photos today but I always keep up with nut size on hickories and this year they look like hedgeapples. Might have to buy a 3rd squirrel gun so I don't shoot the barrel out.
Gonna be a good yr for squirrels.......

must be nice. Every hickory nut tree here is sheeding there nuts. We are not going to have a nut left if it keeps this up....
What is causing it cruff. Where is wartburg? Are yall in a drought? The late frost (may) decimated us a few years back and we didn't have any hickories. It did take a couple years for squirrel numbers to return.

Wartburg, is 20 minutes west of Oak Ridge.... I'm on the edge of catoosa.
I'm thinking that we got so much rain early and the nuts were starting great! Then when the rain stoped the trees could not keep up for the demand of water so the nuts are falling off. Nuts are still on the trees but if we don't get some rain i'm afraid all will be gone.
Every year I see some fall early. Like the bad nuts, but nothing like this year. It has been sounding like rain falling with all the nuts falling here the past couple of weeks.

I also notice this stuff while trail running. The acorns and hickories have been dropping for a good week. Today I noticed the muscadines were starting to drop also. I have the same theory as Cruff. We started off real good with rain this year, and haven't seen a drop in around 2 weeks. We need some bad.

Looks like we should be getting some rain Friday night. This will be the first raindrops we've seen at the house since June 15th. I've been looking a little harder while running (hard to do while cruising along doing 8:30 miles) and it's not as dire as I originally thought. The smaller/younger oaks are still just loaded with acorns.
On an even better note, the wife and I went over to some friends house for dinner Tuesday night. This is the first time I've been to their place. I find out they own about 35 acres of hardwoods and they actually have a bounty on them and pay a kid to come shoot their squirrels!!! The squirrels like to chew on their cabin and they want them gone. I volunteered my services for free. They said to come out anytime. Now, if the deer in their front yard would just start eating their garden and become a whole lot less cute, I would have it made.

I have several hickories on the ground as well. I am looking foward to opening day. A limit is in the cards.
