It's been a while but my daughters and I went on a noodling (grabbling) excursion last week. Great way to "get bit" and stay cool in the process. Even had a couple of past and present TWRA officials along for the ride. I knew a crusty old fart from Bedford county maybe 40 years ago that wore scars on his arms from his noodlin' days. He said that once he latched on to a 50 # cat that danged near drowned him.
My uncle would go grabblin' red horse suckers on the Duck River way before Normandy Dam. He and my dad were great fishing buddies but I never knew of my dad going grabblin'.

This is a common misconception... however the holes where catfish bed are 100% underwater caves, often with very narrow openings just large enough for the catfish to squeeze through. Turtles and snakes have to come to the surface to breath periodically. They won't go in there (A) because the catfish either eat them or at least kick there ass, and (B) because they would be unable to surface to breath. My friend has been noodling for 30+ years and has never encountered a snake or turtle in a catfish hole.
