I checked the carp tournament on the web site and all I see is your name and a bunch of buffalo and other fish.... did you get those buffs while they were mudding in the shallows? Saw some today on my way back from the fishing hole.

Interesting - I didn't even realize they posted the results online. Sometimes, folks don't get around to posting their fish for a bit. They even hold out sometimes so as to not show their cards. I think purposely holding out defeats the purpose of the competition.

I caught all those fish on the banks of the Cumberland River near downtown Nashville. The key is to wait for the right conditions. I went out about a week earlier when the water was muddy and high, and I never saw a single fish - didn't even take the rod out of the rod case in about six hours of searching.

When I caught those fish a couple days ago, there was relatively little boat traffic (which muddies up the river), and the water was relatively clear. It was fairly sunny which is optimal to sight fish, and the wind was quiet. I probably cast to over 100 fish to catch those six.

I had shots at four fish in the 20-30 pound range. I screwed two shots up, and the carp refused on the other two. That's really about par for the course on big fish. I couldn't have asked for a better day and most likely won't find another with conditions that good for the rest of the month.

People always tell me they know a great carp place. Well, almost all places are great for carp. As long as they are shallow enough to see and feeding, the location doesn't matter that much. The water conditions are the absolute key.

Yup the conditions have been great in the harpeth, at least until yesterday's storm. The harpeth is not muddy unless a) the water is up, or b) there are a lot of feeding buffs and carp. I'm guessing I will need a few days to let the river settle down again after the rain. I know several places I can get to from the bank, so finding fish and the right conditions won't be hard, the main thing now is to see if I can get the gear and register for the tourney first. If not this year then there is always next year.
 
Heck, you don't need a tournament to motivate you to try fly fishing for carp. It's pretty much a year-round deal, so you can start anytime.
 
Year round? I thought carp shut down in the winter because the cold slows their metabolism and they eat very little. Also I never see them during the winter, they all go deep and invisible all winter long.
 
Yeah, you're probably right. I never fish for them in the winter. I haven't even noticed either way.

During the winter, the algae dies so the water gets clear but there are never any carp or buffs in sight. I only ever catch bass and stocked trout during the winter, all those fish you see near the surface go into hiding in the winter. Haven't even caught a catfish later than October, maybe this year I will try and break that and get one in the winter, if I have the persistence and am not deer hunting or something else.
