So a farmer I know has a coyote problem. He started setting some traps for them without any success. Using my limited knowledge, I started helping him. We reset his traps so that they would work correctly, but I had little confidence.
Since I'm just starting, I have about 8 or 9 traps I can use for coyotes. Yesterday, I brought them with me while hunting. He flagged me down. I looked in the back of his side by side, He'd brought my stuff up from the barn and off we went to set some traps. :D
Of the traps he set both were popped. In fact something broke the chain to one of the and it was missing. The other one a turkey set it off and the coyotes tore it to pieces. All that was left was the leg in the trap and a billion feathers.
So we reset the one turkey trap. I dug the hole again since it was messed up around it. Bedded it well. Then I put a screen over it and sprinkled it with some of the peat moss I brought. My friend brought some really fine dry dirt from inside his barn. With the combination of the moss and the dirt. You could not see the trap at all. I then used a piece of rebar and wobbled out a hole pretty deep. It was exactly in the proper position according to everything I have read. We baited it with some leftover something he had and I threw a marshmellow covered in Hawbakers Coyote lure down the hole. :)
We set the rest of my traps all over his property. Mostly we put them a intersections of the trails he uses to check the area. We saw some good sign over near his cattle. I put my last trap near his kill pile. I had a couple of hairless raccoons I had from before the season ended. I had forgot to put them in the trash and they were POWERFUL stinky.
Anyway, all the sets looked better. I've learned a lot from you guys and from watching trapping shows on tv and youtube. Hopefully the farmer will get some coyotes this week! It is nice that he is checking the trapline for me. I told him I'd help him set them,but there was no way I can check them everyday. It is almost an 80 mile round trip to his farm!
