Yes it opened this past weekend and one do any diggin? Has anyone herd what it mayb goin for a pound yet? I won't to go but everyone around here has been diggin for a while now so it doesn't leave a lot for us that stay within the law. Or have some people u take once then you see them diggin the crap out of the place u took them to! Its to hot to go in the woods and see someone had already been there. Well good luck to all and dig some for me!
 
I dont know why they open it so early. There arent any red berries on here yet and there wont be for awhile. But yeah just like in your situation, everybody digs year round anyway. Havent heard prices.
 
I dont know why either talked to a guy today that has over five pounds already I think this is just sad! I did get to go for a while tonight got 27 bunches nothing really big but alright for an hour after work.
 
I have been going alittle. I've found just a load of sang but, most are still holding green berries. I only dig sang that either doesn't have any berries or are red. I've read studies that say up to 75% of green berries planted after mid August germinate. I've tried planting green berries from my home stock and I would say it's closer to 25%. That's just not worth it to me. I visited a place acouple weeks ago that had some real nice 4 prongs in the patch. I revisited a week later and every plant with more than 2 prongs were dug. I know for a fact that there were several hundred ginseng plants waisted because of greed. If at all possible I have my wife drop me off at my spots. This time of year around here if your known to dig sang people keep an eye out for you. It a shame you have to sneak around like a criminal on your own families land. Anyone that has 5 lbs already is either lieing or poached it. I have a system that I use to locate sang. I use google earth and set the time table at known locations. I then run it threw areas that I have access/permission and when the shadows line up I mark it on google earth and then on my map. So far this year I'm running at 95% accuracy. Unbelievably there is a ton of sang growing on state ride aways. I was throwing on my pack one day at the truck and happened to look over and spotted 5, 3 prongs. This place is HEAVILY used too. I've been told it's starting out at $350 but, to hold out because it COULD go as high as $575-600. I'll sell at $500. I've dug some blood root ($6-10 lb) and black cohash ($3-5 lb) just because I had traveled a good distance for green berries and didn't want to come home empty handed. I figured I made up my gas money.
Something I've noticed this year... I watch my sang..LOL!! is that green berries are just falling off. I don't know if it's normal or just the heat/dry that's making them drop. I've not really payed that much attention in years past I guess. The deer are also wearing out my sang patches this year. I don't have permission to deer hunt but, the land owner lets me dig. He now has 2 stands directly over my sang patches.
 
Oh and I found my biggest plant ever (double 4 prong over 24inchs tall) in late november some 10 years ago. It was still holding it's red berries. I clipped it off, and planted the berries. It didn't come back the next year so I went to proding around (worried I killed it) like an idiot and broke the root in half. I just stopped and the next year the 2, 4 prongs came back along with almost all the berries I planted. I've never dug them and as far as I know no one else has either. I wish they wouldn't open the season until mid sept. A poacher doesn't care thou. I believe "technically" it's the selling of sang from Aug. 15-March 31 that institutes the season.
 
i tell ya it's getting worser every year on gensing getting gone before i get a chance to dig it. i went and done some coon training last month and i found a lot of good 3 to 4 prong plants.and when i found out it opened this past weekend i went to dig it up and found out someone already beat me to it and they wasnt supopost to be anyone in there diggin exsept me.but you all know how that goes but i wished it was still there i know i would have hit the jack pot this year but now i'll have to look on some of my other places i hunt it on.
 
It is almost impossible to catch a ginseng poacher. Unless an official is standing over them watching them dig plants with green berries they can't prove that it even had berries at all. As far as just tresspassing that's a different story. The rules are so vague that it's hard to get a tresspassing violation to stick.
 
Well I weighted what I found that noone dug on my place got a little over 4oz dried out. It is at 325 a pound dried right now. One thing I have found is if you find someone close to you that sells it green that is probally been diggin your sang!Alright guys I am looking for someone to go with me up on royal blue I got a few spots I would like to go to if I ever get time just hate goin by myself bc it is sofar back in there. I have a close friend that is "disabled" and he has dug over five pound since it opened I know he does not dig early but not all of us get to go all the time havin to work for a living and all. I am not dockin anybody but I got a dad that loves to digg but just can not do it anymore due to seven back surgeries now thats disabled to me. I have been finding alot of red berries this week almost everything I have dug is either no berries or red. found a few that has already turned yellow. Hey blountcounty boy give me a shout I would like to learn how you was talking about that google earth sounds like a good ideal I would like to learn
 
Ok ya'll got my interest. How do you locate this stuff? Took me long enough to start finding morels with any consistency. How do you find gensing? what areas hold them? Are they even in my part of the state...Clarksville area.
 
I find "sang" on North, North eastern and eastern slopes. Look for Maiden Hair Ferns, Blood root, Cohash for indicator plants. Also it doesn't always grow in the deepest darkest hollers. For examples of "partner" plants just do a Google search for the plants above and you can take a look at them. Yes, you should have gensing in you area.
 
Just like blount countyboy said it grows all places but north facing is the best place I start thanks for the pm country boy!Hey tasaman I hunt the fort a little but never have found it there because I think of it being to flat I am not saying it is not there just harder to find because of flat land you got any hollars around there that is where I would start!
 
I have loads of it on my property. Who do you sell it to and do you have to have a permit to sell it? I never knew you could dig it up and sell it.
 
you just have to check at your local co-op and they will tel you where and when they are buying it. You dont have to have anything to sell just the sang. hry twitch but if you need some help diggin hollar at me! good luck
 
Alright so this is a little off subject but hung a duddie stand for my seven year old to hunt last sat and had cameras well my bro went back in to day to pull cards and evrything gone! Including the sang I had planted for my boy to dig in a few years. Just all goes back to people not caring and things like this is why I can not hunt on good places some jerks go in a place and messes it up for us few that try to go by the rules and laws! Oh yhea only have 12 ac that this was on very close to a barn and house. So if u guys don't here from me for a while I found then and might get out in a few yrs! Sorry about the post just had to vent!
 
Rut. That's some crap right there. I have had so much stuff stolen from the woods it's not even funny. People don't care. I ask permission and if someone says no then that means no just like if you were asking to hunt anything else. I have a patch at the house and I found where someone went threw it. They didn't dig anything (nothing big enough to fool with yet) but, they still trespassed. I've got a pretty good idea who it is and I'll catch them.

i found a new spot this year me and dad have dug about 2 pounds so far. gonna go in the morning been finding a lot of big stuff. i don't think anyone has been on this place in quite some time
 
this are some from today didn't find to much. on a side note while the pics are uploading my dad told me that my grandpa was so good at finding it he sold 1000 dollars worth in 1968. my uncle told me that it sold for 50 bucks a pound that year. that's 20 pounds of dry ginseng, today that would be worth roughly 8,000 dollars. thought that was a neat story. my grandpa was an old man by the time my dad was born so i never got to dig any with him
