I've got a 1986 model Rem 700 Mtn rifle in .280 which my parents gave me for my 16th birthday. I've used it to take probably around 50 whitetails, a couple of red stags, and a bunch of other misc critters. Back in the day, it was shooting around 1-1 1/4" groups, but for some reason, accuracy kept getting a little worse over the past few years. Poor stock was well worn, numerous dings and even a few gouges. A year and a half ago, I decided to refinish the stock and go ahead and pillar bed it to see if it improved accuracy. After refinishing and bedding the stock, the gun has sat unfired in the safe.
For some reason, probably mostly nostalgia, I decided to see how she would shoot and get er ready for deer season. Mounted an old vari-x III 3.5-10 on top and pulled out a box of old handloads which worked better than anything else when I last shot the gun. After a few shots to get her on paper, I was pleasantly surprised. First group was around 3/4". Second group was .16"!!! (I know, it's a fluke, esp with only a 10x scope and a 3 shot group... but it's the best group I've ever gotten out of this gun.)
