My cousin and I have been talking about a floating Alaskan moose hunt for the future, probably 4-5 years away. We aren't getting younger, so we are starting to map out some plans. We would like to have a drop camp and float down a river for this hunt. Any suggestion about where to begin would be appreciated. I know that you have to hire a guide there, so any suggestions would be appreciated.
Just another bucket list to do before we get too old.
Thanks, 1hunter

Oh yeah, and if you think for a moment that you want to go with a cheap or unresearched outfitter, read this story:

Man Poser, what a story! Glad he got his moose but what a pain. A moose hunt is on my bucket list as well. I also saw some trips which were advertised as boat plane trips. Sounded as if they traveled the waterways using those boats with airplane propellors. It was cheaper than the rest. $3500. But I was afraid of anything that cheap and not sure I wanted to hunt that way. By the way, Jim Shockey's got a moose hunt for a measly $17,500. I was figuring that any decent moose hunt was going to be about $10 to $12 thousand. I will probably only go once, so I want a good chance for success.

Thanks Poser, that helps a lot. Just trying to figure where to start is the first step. It is something that I've been wanting to do since I was a kid and my cousin is crazy enough to agree. So with your help, we will start our planning, and planning and planning so more. Each step will get us closer than ever, just hope I don't get too old too quick (lol).

Good luck and keep us posted on your planning. AK moose and Canadian sheep are my bucket list hunts...just need the $$

Larry Bartlett is a great resource ( http://www.pristineventures.com/index.php ) and Alaska Outdoor Forum ( http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com )has a great group of guys. We used High Adventure Air and had a great trip and would recommend them. However I probably would use someone else next trip.

Stay flexible. We were scheduled to hunt 14 days on a float hunt but were delayed 3 days due to weather. Got put in a drop camp because rivers were outside banks and pulled out 2 days early. Did I mention stay flexible.

Moose hunting is fun until you kill a moose. Make sure you are prepared to carry 700lbs of meat several miles if needed. I killed mine within 1/4 mile of camp and it still took two full days to transport.

It's an experience you'll never forget. And DYI can be done fairly inexpensively.

I lived in Alaska for 35 years and shot my share of bull moose so can offer some tips.

Alaska has strict rules in bringing out all the meat. Some areas require the meat be brought out on the bone. Make damn sure you and your partner are capable of backpacking a entire hind quarter from where the moose drops to the boat. Meat takes special protection on a float hunt. Shoot one early in the trip with warm weather and you have problems. Don't let F&G find you with half a moose carcass or you will be paying some extreme fines. If you bone out the moose take photos of the kill site to prove you cleaned the carcass of meat.

If the area you are in allows a 3 brow tine bull or 50 inches wide there are no compromises. Bring out a bull with 2 brow tines and a 49 inch wide rack and you are in trouble.

Quality gear is a must. This includes tents, back packs, and coats and such.

There is about a 75% chance or greater you will be stranded on one end of your trip.
