Although our over-all deer sightings were not great (deer seen on 41% of hunts--60% would be a good year), and buck sightings were a little lower than optimal (25% of hunts with buck sightings--30% would be a good year), 3 1/2+ year-old buck sightings hit an all time high on my property this year. And I still can't kill one! :(

Two opportunities, two missed opportunities. The first opportunity, the buck vanished in the thick fog opening morning of MZ season. The second opportunity, last Saturday, the doe the buck was chasing got uphill and downwind of me and busted me before the buck made it through the thick brush I was hunting next to.

Grrrr!

Looks like I'm going to go buckless this year.

I have had the same luck Bryan. I shot at a good buck on Friday the 18th with my muzzleloader and the bullet didnt make it through all the brush. His G3 split at the top :( . He was ATLEAST a 3 1/2. On my 2nd opportunity, the 4 1/2 that I was after this year that I have so much history with, even passing him up last year as a VERY under average 3 1/2 (the one where I shot his momma back in 2007). I got set up right next to where he beds the majority of the time with the perfect wind about an hour before light. Right when it started to get light, I heard him coming. He came up to within 15 yards of my tree, the wind all of a sudden shifted straight towards him. He stood there for 15 minutes and didnt move. Finally, he took off to the next ridge where I passed him up last year  .

We have about the same luck this year. Hopefully, it will change

Unfortunately, we never see 3 1/2+ year-old bucks post-rut. In 24 years, we've seen a grand total of one 3 1/2 year-old buck post November and zero mature bucks post November.

Odds are, my chances at a 3 1/2+ year-old buck for the rest of the season are near zero.

I understand where you are coming from. I usually see anywhere from 5-10 mature bucks on the properties I hunt with at least one chance at taking one with my bow. Not this year. I've seen one 3.5 yr old and a lower number of does this year. On a good note, I have plenty of ag land to hunt and hopefully will see mature bucks feeding by the end of season.

Is the rut really over? The reason I ask is after lifting weights this morning I started out about 6:30 to go jog. As I came around the side of the house I looked down the drive and there was a small buck (4 or 6 max) running all over the field with his nose to the ground as if he was trailing where a doe had been. He jumped my neighbors fence and then came back. I watched him until he crossed the road. Anyway, good luck the rest of the way. I hope to be in the woods as much as possible in December as so far I've only been 7 days and 3 of those were in Alabama.

Same here...

total waste of time for me to hunt more than 3 or 4 days after peak rut.

EXCEPT- rarely one will catch the older deer after they've bunched back up in bachelor groups the first week of Jan on my farms. That's the ONLY time I've ever seen an older (3.5+) deer after the rut.

This year was one of the most fun I've had in a LONG time. Hardly any killing was done since we chose to pass all the does, but I had 2 other friends with me for the first 5 days of my 10d hunt, and we saw 10 3.5yr olds and up between us.

Great rut activity, with at least 6 estrous chases.

My buddy who shot the 153" 4.5 y/o last year actually passed up a mid 130's 3.5 y/o 9ptr this year. I felt bad for him, because he really wanted to shoot it, but didn't because I prefer to let them get to 4.5. I hope karma rewards him and he kills it next year when's he's 160".

I killed a 4.5 y/o we've been following for years, and my other friend also killed a 4.5 y/o that we can't seem to identify from previous years. From pics we had back in September, I couldn't tell if he was 3.4 or 4.5, but he filled out nicely prerut.

My cousin took his 8y/o little girl, and she shot her first deer- a top end 1.5 y/o 7 ptr. That was exciting!

My only failure was not killing my main target buck, despite him being seen twice off the property.

Coyotes were the bane of my existance this year... I saw them on nearly every single hunt. Killed 2, missed 3 (damn ML), and had a pile too far to even try a shot. My buddies only killed one, and missed one. One of them even saw 7 yoties at one time on one hunt. I may have to come back up in Jan/Feb just to coyote hunt.

I did manage to kill the alpha pair on one farm, though... that'll help.

Had fun shooting the steel at long range as well. Didn't even get to attempt to shoot at real critters at long range this year, however... of the 10 days I hunted, only 2 had less than 13mph winds. Also, since I had to work Thanksgiving day, I opted to take all my time off the week before Thanksgiving and skip opening week of rifle.

For the most part it worked out pretty well... in the 90 hours I spent on stand, I got to watch the rut unfold... the first couple of days had young bucks running does like crazy, with the 3.5 y/o's carefully cruising. By the 14th, the first does were coming in and all heck broke loose. The 16th-19th were really tough, however, with all the older bucks in lockdown. The older deer started getting a little more visible after the 20th.

This now make 5 years in a row we've taken a 4.5 y/o buck off the farm.

I had a rough year too, but managed one 8 pt. Just last Saturday I'saw a 4 pt. chasing a doe. Why have I alway's heard that the big boy's chase late season?

Time to find new defacto stand locations?

I have had the same tough luck as well. On the 19th and 20th I saw bucks chasing does, and I thought to myself, Im going to have a great thanksgiving hunt. I sat pretty much all day from the 23th to the 27th and NEVER saw a deer. I was so dishearted.

My FIL hunted with me and he saw one young 4pt. on Saturday morning and that was the only deer we saw between the 2 of us.

I am still at a loss as what to do this weekend, as last week I left all my field side stands, (our farm is open row crop) and hunted much closer to cover and bedding areas on adjoining properties hoping to catch a buck cruising the thick stuff, and my plan didnt work out.. Not sure what to do know??

guys i was right there with ya , buck sightings on 1 to 2 year deer was up high but over that nothing , no sign to let me believe they were even in the area . but out of the blue weds before thanksgiving i took my second largest deer in tn . then back to nothing . ya just never know when or how its going to happen , i guess thats why we hunt . good luck to ya all

Is it because you guys quit hunting late? Several times I have seen late season 3.5 yo bucks and just wonder what you guys do different. You know cathole and in chalk hollow I have seen some studs very late season.

The last youth hunt can be an eye opener. Take your daughter(if she hunts) and you might be suprised.

I have seen the same buck at the same scrape 2 mornings in a row here driving to work. 2nd rut fixing to kick in. This weekend might be good if the cold weather will hold. This not being able to get off work this year is killing me.

I had a hard time, too. I had 4 pope and young bucks within 20 yards of me one evening and didnt have a shot opportunity. The next week,I missed a P&Y buck. I had another P@Y buck at 60 yards for an hour one evening. I missed the biggest buck I have ever seen on a chip shot with a muzzleloader. My bullet hit a limb that I did not see. I finally connected on a 4 1/2 yr old buck this past weekend. Stay in the saddle and don't give up. My buck sighting are by far the highest I have ever had. I passed 5 or 6 bucks that I would have shot in years passed, including a 3.5 yr old 10 pter that I could have shot twice now.

Yep, the 2nd rut is usually good here, I usually see a few good bucks then.

Probably. But trail-cams also show no daylight movement by 3 1/2+ bucks after the 1st week of December. Now I'm going to give that "1st week of December" hunting a try, but after that....

We've hunt December and even early January when the seasons ran into Jan. We just see no 3 1/2+ bucks moving during daylight and trail-cams show no daylight pictures of 3 1/2+ bucks.

In fact, I suspect the real problem is the amount of pressure we put on the property during the November rut. We put so much pressure on the property in November that all the older deer are totally nocturnal post-rut. We put FAR more hunting pressure on our place than surrounding properties get hunted.

We don't experience a 2nd rut. Never have. Now we do see (on trail-camera) an "end of the rut" surge in mature bucks back to cruising and checking scrapes the first week of December, and we're going to hunt that, but after that period, nothing through the end of the season in the way of rutting activity.

With a new baby, I haven't been able to hunt very much this year but I have not seen a single 3.5 + year old buck this year. Quite a few does and 4 small bucks has been it for me. However, historically I actually see more older bucks in December than November on my place so I am not giving up hope yet. The oldest buck (not the biggest, but the oldest) I have ever killed was actually on New Year's Day back in 2004.

With the habitat u guys have why is it that the 3.5 and older sightings r not there in the past 24 years? they move r go nocturnal only r what? they r somewhere

They go nocturnal probably due to our intense hunting pressure in November. We still get trail-cam pictures of numerous 3 1/2+ year-old bucks in December, but outside of the 1st week of December, all of those pictures are taken at night, no matter the trail-cams location/set-up.

I hear ya. You just dont see older bucks moving in daylight on my places post rut either. I mean it does happen, but not enough to matter. I also had a "bad" year. Saw 2 shooters, barely to far in bow and to far in ML. Never got a shot, but got my 2 does in archery. However, my 2 hunting buddies, my dad and best friend, both got great bucks. I was glad for that because they are usually just dragging mine out and never killing any bucks lol All in all a good year I guess though, I saw a ton of deer, a ton of small bucks, and finally got to where I dont feel like shooting a 2.5 yr old.

How would you characterize 'intense' pressure for the area that you hunt? What does the number of hunters, number of hunts, total time in the stand, paths to the stands, latent human scent, etc look like? How much would you say a mature buck will actually tolerate before he either leaves an area or goes nocturnal? Have you been able to measure this in some way...maybe with trail cameras or maintaing a log of sightings?

IMO I would wait until the last weeks of the season like Mega said. That is the only time we ever see or get any daylight photos of mature deer again. We have killed two extremely elusive 5 year old bucks on the last day of the season on our farm. We could never see them all season. Everyone starts to quit and go duck hunting and the deer start to relax especially when they group back up.

I thought for sure I was gonna go buckless this year and was in a terrible mood thinking about hunting the rain again but it only takes a minute.

The weather has been killing me this year. Every chance I get to hunt the winds pick up and temperatures start to rise. Then the rain moves in. That being said, I missed an absolute stud early last week and have been seeing several younger bucks.
