Fruit Trees

I've often thought about planting fruit trees on one of my leases as another food source through the summer, and possibly a bow season set up. How many years will it take for fruit trees (such as apples, pears, and plums) to bear fruit? Just wondering if it would be worth the investment on land I lease without a long term agreement.

If it was me I wouldn't and I have planted tons of fruit trees. To many other things you can do for "instant" gratification.

I plant beans and corn in the summer, and plant winter food plots as well. This year a combination of wheat, oats, turnips, and sugar beets.

When I was a teenager, a guy told me a story about hunting an abandoned apple orchard in Illinois. He had pictures of big Illinois bucks to back up his story, but I've never been able to get the image out of my head.

Just a thought. But it could be a big investment for someone else on lease land.

Well, I thought the ArborDay Foundation would have fruit trees at reasonable prices but that is not the case. Prices have definitely jumped, nearly double and maybe more. The only good thing is everything I have ever bought from them grew and produced fruit. Nonetheless, they have a selection that is hard to pass. Here's the website: http://www.arborday.org/index.cfm

They have Hazelnut trees for 7 bucks apiece if you are member, which is worth joining for the discount, and with proper care I think they bear fruit faster than the advertised 4-5 years.
