Food Plots Frost planting?

Do any of y'all ever frost plant and are you planning to take advantage of the cold weather that we have now to get some seed down? Tomorrow I'm gonna buy a 50lb bag of some kind of ladino clover or a good clover mix at my local feed/seed store and be ready to put it down in late February during some deep frosty weather. Gonna go ahead and get the seed before the locals make a run on it.

After reading some previous posts regarding the matter, I have decided to wait until February but gonna go ahead and get my seed.

I do some every year. This year I plan to do a lot because there were several fields I didn't get to in the Fall. It generally works well with clovers.

I have several times, and had pretty good results. If you can catch snow, frost seed into the snow, works very well in my experience.

I used to overseed portions of my fescue hay fields with clover in February.... but they have been since converted into cash crop/ cover crop rotation, so no longer a need to spend the time and money frost seeding.

Food plots get nuked in May and planted for the summer, so no point in frost seeding them.

How exactly does this work?

I'm assuming the snow helps work the seed into the soil when it melts off. Aren't the temps too cold for anything to germinate?

The freezing and thawing draws the seed into the ground. The rain or snow helps bring it in as well. It doesn't germinate till soil conditions warm up . It lays dormant until then but it's ready when conditions allow with good dirt contact because of the freeze/ thaw, freeze thaw .

I frost seed clover and chicory in my plot on Feb.6th and already seeing germination. I'm afraid this cold weekend may kill it. If so, it's still early enough that I can start over if needed.

No. Im finishing up mine this weekend as well.

I wish I had the opportunity. I have 4 acres left to frost seed and it ain't happening. Unless I can convince my cousins to do it on a "lick of time"

What's your low temp forecast? If you're gonna be in the mid to low 20s Monday/Tuesday night I'd go ahead and do it tomorrow.

Especially with the moisture that this rain is gonna leave in the ground. Any of that moisture that "spews" up with the frigid temps will leave very small voids in the soil and pull seed down when it thaws.
